The hike from Land's End (Cliff House) to Golden Gate is very scenic and can easily be done in one morning. You can even take public transit to get back to where you came from if you don't want to backtrack. If you want to do more hiking outside of the city will be a much larger time commitment...
It sounds like you've decided against doing this, but if someone else is thinking about it, if you machine one post shorter than the other in order to rotate it, you're likely going to have problems bolting it back into place since the bolts won't be close to perpendicular with the brake mount...

I moved to San Francisco last month and so far have enjoyed riding around the city and exploring some of the Marin Headlands and Sausalito, but am wondering if anyone here is local and is involved in any group rides that I could join to find trails within biking distance of the city?
I was in Finale this time last year. Great place to ride, and even better scenery!

If you get your bikes unpacked and want to go riding next weekend, I usually meet at Bikes n Boards on Tubingerstr. around 3-3:30 for a Saturday ride with the guys from the bike shop.
I've been out to Schönbuch once. What I saw was nothing special, but at the same time worth riding. Again, the area is mostly forest roads with short sections of single track cut between them. There are a few fun downhill sections.
