i see where your coming from, but the majority of the repairs most shops (in the uk at least do), are setting up brakes, changing pads, fixing punctures all little jobs on $100-400 bikes that take 10-15 mins and can make some cash to keep the shops running for the actual riders rather than just...

bike mechs have to work on mostly crap bikes for normal people, theres no way the shops could make profit if they turned all cheap bikes away, think about it if you own 2-3k worth of bike, you'll do most, if not all of the work it needs yourself, so shops...
i've managed to build about 8 wheels using the frame and a few spokes as guides. yes, its harder to get a perfect wheel within 0.5mm in every direction, but you just have to take some time about it, give it a try yourself, if you screw up, it won't cost much if any more, and if you get it...
depends how cheap you are, i just use planet x probes, and make use of the top class warranty (in the uk at least) everyfew months, means 3 days off the bike, but its cheaper than a thomson.
the problem with the golds is they get too hot too fast, i had my 205mm e4 pumping out using them :eek:
go for greens, only use reds if you wanna stop fast, and buy pads once a month
theres 3 kinds of roadies;
the cocky wannabe's who you seem to be suffering, look down at mtbers because they ride mtb's
the proper roadies that only think about themselves and thier idea heart rate (still a bit cocky tho)
and the really fast and friendly roadies that turn out to be...
