The Anti-Fun club is doing it again

HEY! I'm a baby boomer. I'm also female and it makes me damned proud that they chose a video featuring awesome females in their anti-mtb site.:weee: I wish I could ride like those girls! Seriously though, this kind of opposition is sad and small-minded, but it happens all the time...

    Advice needed for new MTB

Need more info. What don't you like about your current bike? What do you hope to get out of an upgrade? What model is your current bike? Sometimes upgrading components (especially wheels) can make a big difference, especially if you like your frame geometry. Also, do you intend to keep...

    Why SS?

What Senorfrog said and IT'S FUN!!! You feel the difference in acceleration when the chain line is perfect and the chain doesn't have to go through all those derailleur pulleys. Also, it helps you improve your riding technique.

    2 simple questions...

Should have known that Park would have a rotor truing tool. I looked it up-the DT-2--very cool....and we've been using adjustable wrenches all of these years! I'm definitely going to have to surprise my SO with this one!

Want a 29er, noob to bikes in general

One thing to consider is chain stay length. The longer it is, the harder it will be to pull up the front to get over obstacles. A few friends have indicated that they find that their arms & shoulders get tired and wonder whether it is because it's harder to pull up the front. My boyfriend is...

Buying a new 29er/Voodoo fit questions

A 1" difference in effective TT is pretty big. If it were me, I wouldn't go for it. I'd be squeamish at 1/2" difference if I felt like the 24.5" fit me well. I have an 18" VooDoo Bizango (26" wheels, and 23" effective TT) and I'm 5'8" and I wouldn't want to go any smaller. My advice...

KHS Gravity Open - UCI - ProGrt #2 - Plattekill Bike Park, NY

The GPS almost always underestimates the actual distance since its sampling frequency misses nuances of twists and turns in the trail. Depending on the trail, the GPS can underestimate distance by up to about 10%. According to Laszlo, it also underestimated the elevation drop by about 100 feet.

    First singlespeed ride w/bike pics....

Congrats!! Can't see the pics, but that's probably my computer. My experience is, the more you SS, the more you love it. It's not just because of conditioning; it's also because you'll adjust your riding style to get more out of your SS. You're going to get in awesome shape, given that...

Used high end fork vs brand new midrange one? Help!

The 318 Tora is a good fork. No question that the Talas is better. I have a 318 Tora on my geared hard-tail and a Fox F100 on my single-speed. When I ride the 318 Tora I don't find myself cursing it or being disappointed with it, even after riding the Fox F100. On the other hand, when I ride...

    Lower back pain

Definitely try core strengthening. It helps a lot of people but unfortunately it didn't make much of a difference to me. I think it's because I wasn't using my core strength when I was riding. What good are strong stomach muscles if you don't use them. What made the biggest difference to...

Do I realy need 8 inch rotors?

I run Avid Juicy 3's with 7" rotors on my FR/DH bike and I cannot lock the tires on very steep downhill stuff. (never have this issue with the less-steep x-c trails and my BB7/6" rotor set-up). Decontaminating helped a bit, but I still can't lock up the brakes on steep stuff. I've been told...

    Light frame ideas

My Surly 1x1 is 23.5 lbs. The frame isn't the lightest in the world, but I cut weight off it via components. Probably the biggest bang for the buck was rim brakes instead of disc (I really don't need disc brakes on this bike and I have my rim brakes tuned so well they are phenomenal). Maybe...

Best bang for your buck FS XC?

I third Jamis. That said.....there are lots of good brands out there. The most bang for the buck for a new bike is most often the bike you can get the best deal on. Ask you LBS if they or their distributers have last year's model at a good price. Sometimes last year's model has better...

Is this a good deal for a Noob bike??

I still ride and love my entry-level mountain bike...that said, I've upgraded most of the components over time. Here's what worked for me. I bought an entry-level Kona (other brands work as well)--it retailed for around $600-$650 at the time. It had a good frame, decent fork, rim brakes...

    which foot forward?

I started the season with one foot forward (right I think) and forced myself to get comfortable with the other, and now I prefer the other. My right foot is definitely my power foot for wheelie-ing over logs. Right foot for cartwheels and left foot for walk-overs. Regular stance on a...

    Winter Riding

    - put warm water in the camelback--it helps; remember to evacuate the tube if it's really cold or it will freeze; neoprene tube covers help but they can still freeze up. Down to 38 degrees: - fairly thin cycle tights; knee pads (protective and warm) - polyprop t-neck; short-sleeved bike...

How's your performance in cold weather?

I don't road ride when it's really cold (my excuse is salt on the roads), but I'll mountain bike down to 6 degrees F (if it's sunny). Last winter, I had a cough all winter from cold-temperature riding. It stopped once the temperatures warmed up. Some people are much more susceptible to...
