Simple and cheap sounds good.
Here is where I'm @ now:
Chameleon
100mm x 20mm thru axle fork or Fox Float 130 dropped to 100mm QR
721 wheels
32x15 drive w/ maybe Shimano or Deity cranks
Rim V-brakes rear (maybe cable disc front)
Oury grips w/ wire & glue
Bars 2.5/3"rise
50mm block stem
Cheap...
Hey I got hold of an old 2000 Chameleon for $100 and want to build it up. And I need help. I want to ride it DJ, BMX, trail and errands.
What I've got:
Small frame w/ no disc mount so rim brakes in rear.
Mavic 721 to XT rear wheel
Mavic 721 20mm front hub (possibly can change this to QR)...
Doubtful anything spilled on them. I'm going to rub down the rotors w/ Whhhiskey and see if that helps. I don't think bleeding is neccesary seeing as I have < day/24hrs of total riding on them.
Bought Saints brakes last fall. If I remember they were working great until I started skiing and stored it away. The bike spent winter in garage.
Now they are loud as **** x 3 good rides and don't stop nearly as well. The rear is a joke actaully. I can't skid on loose dirt unless I pull as...
Congrats to him. Palmer semi-launched my riding. I remember I had not ridden in years. I busted my old bike(rigid) and went to a shop to get parts. I was looking around and saw a Specialized ad w/ Palmer riding DH on a FSR w/ a dual crown (hadn't seen a bike like that before). He was flying...
-I had a set of A-labs that fell off riding (eh-bout two seconds after landing a drop)
That said, A-Lab Mike replaced them real fast & I've been beating the hell out of them since (several years) w/ no issues at all. I'm very happy w/ them (it was pretty scary though). Perfect w/ the 5.10 shoes...
First I like this ^. I appreciate the educational extras in some of these posts. But, it can get silly. So agreed.
Second, I'd love to try the Float. You hear almost nothing but great stuff about it.
I run the 2006 36VanRC2 so I can only speak for that model. I run it w/ full high speed and minimum 4click slow speed. Bottoming is on max setting from factory. The fork when set up like that it is perfect for just about everything trail or DH.
You get full use of travel w/o bottoming. Couldn't...
I don't doubt the SX's high performance or that of the Spec riders who likely get them free ? But, why not just pick a bike and company w/ a solid record instead ? That way you can just go ride.... ( I just got back )
I do not own one. But, the fact that this thing has gone 5 (excuse me) 6 pages deep speaks volumes. Superior product (maybe) from a full on corporation (absolutely). I wouldn't buy one unless I was trying to go Pro. It appears the average rider would do better w/ a truly rider oriented company.
I had 00 Hayes w/ 8". Best thing that happened to them was Razor Rock levers. Second best was that every shop has parts for them. The brakes were reliable w/ regular service. But, I only DH about 6x a year. Also, I can't comment on comparison other systems. I'm just getting onto Saints now...
I've driven: Jeeps, Rabbit, Sedan, & now a Pickup. Save yourself the trouble and get a truck. Toyota if possible. I'm on my second and love them. Old style Tundra or new Tacoma. 4 door is the way to go.
