    For the sake of completeness, updating this thread with the 2007-2011... (Which I currently have). This version shaved something like .5lb off of the previous version and has noticeably thinner tubing (as evidenced by the multiple dents I've put in it). Still rides great.

    Bike in the box is about 25lb (santa cruz superlight, size XL). Just squirms in under 50lb with tools. Case is made by Platt. ID 22x34x12" I think. It's technically too big to be regular baggage, but nobody has ever looked at it twice in at least 10 plane rides.

    You might also consider a device such as Truvativ's Hammerschmidt, which is an internally geared crankset, giving you two gears with no chain tensioner. Pricey tho.
