Brought my '93 Bontrager back to life this past Winter. Rides great! Was a lot of fun building it up myself. Only thing I didn't do myself was build up the wheels...
That's what I did when I switched to a 2x9. Also swapped cassettes to an 11-34. Climbing range still intact, and have a big enough gear to not miss having the front big ring... :thumb:
I have heard a lot of great reviews for the Ultimate Pro-Elite repair stand. The clamp mechanism adjusts w/ one hand and the legs fold up and the main pole telescopes. A bit pricey, but from what I have read, competely worth it.
One is on my list for Santa (read WIFE) this year. :banana...
Interesting stuff on the Oil Mods... I have an '07 with the '08 shock replacements. I haven't had most problems mentioned above, but good to know. I'm around 220 lbs. and have my front shock set at 110 psi and the rear at 200 psi. I haven't hit anything big enough to bottom out the shocks...
For riding the C&O Canal, a $400 - $500 bike will be more than enough. Bikes in that range come with reasonable front shocks and even comfy seat post shocks. Makes things nice and comfy for that style of riding.
Can you smash some singletrack with that kind of bike. No way...
