This is really interesting, the article is well-written and worth a read in full. The author put a lot of emphasis on bike length vs the ability (or lack) to weight the front wheel effectively in corners to maximise exit speed.
Could it be that the longer reach/wheelbase trend delivers the most...
Hahaha this is so true Gary. The last group I met were incredibly cultish about them, to the point of thinking bikes with suspension were totally pointless because chunky tyres exist. It does make me chuckle when people on fatbikes turn up to the puffer expecting an advantage on the snow when it...
Putting some aluminium jockey wheels on my old GX derailleur was a surprisingly good upgrade for not a huge amount of money. The difference it made to the noise of the drivetrain was worth the money alone. The mounting pivot also had terrible play by the end but still shifted pretty reliably.
You've probably heard enough from others already but I thought I'd give you my opinion as I'm in one of the positions that you've laid out as an option - I own a 140mm trail bike (Devinci Troy) and a 26" DH bike (Evil Undead) which I raced consistently 2015-2018 but less so recently.
To keep it...
I'm on a 2014 evil undead that has had several years of cased jumps, trips to the alps, trips to fort william, sideways landings and general unmitigated abuse. The only thing it had to show for it was a small delamination around the shock cradle, but I dremelled it down and put in some more...
Reading between the lines on this one: "Instead of losing money on warranty replacements of broken carbon frames, we added more material to compensate for poor materials and manufacturing quality."
Sorry for the late reply, was away on holiday.
See attached a picture of a cross section of a downhill carbon bar of one of the "premier" leading brands. The cut was taken through the middle of the clamping section. If you need further explanation of why this is terrifying:
The cross section...
Composites Engineer here. The fibres themselves won't fatigue but as someone pointed out above the matrix material does if it's strained beyond yield. A degradation of mechanical properties is something that any decent design engineer working with composites will consider.
However, fatigue is...
Indeed. I fail to see what all the fuss was about. She was over 20 seconds off the pace of the winner. That's a long time in elite downhill. Not to take away the fact that competing at VDS is gnarly as anything, but if this were any other rider no one would have batted an eyelid.
Nice! Yeah I can't believe how wet it's been. Rode some "secret" stuff at glenny t recently and it was so good. All of the best stuff around there seems to be unofficial.
Had my second day on the germbler. I decided to take 1.5 volume spacers out of the shock (down from the max of 4 to 2.5) as...
Cheers! Really good thanks, initial impressions are:
The bike is really composed, geometry seems to be incredibly consistent/predictable through the travel
Fox air stuff. Very impressed with how supple the 40 and the x2 are straight off the bat. There's still a lot of fettling to do though, I...
Thought I'd give an update in case anyone is interested:
Heading for the first outing tomorrow to get the suspension set up. From rolling around the driveway the sizing seems spot on - maneuverable but still enough length in the wheelbase. We'll see tomorrow though. I'm fairly buzzing...
The size of bearings and mondraker's history of making hardware out of swiss cheese was definitely a concern for me.
So I had the chance to ride a large gambler today, and not only was I blown away by it but it also confirmed a lot of your comments. That thing wants to be pounded like...
Good shout, the front centre numbers are interesting to look at. Although I think @djjohnr says it's probably best just to try them which is what I suspected originally. I thought it might be worth just looking at numbers, but to be honest it's all pretty academic until I throw a leg over them...
Totally with you in the riding positioning side of things. In fact that's what I've spent most of my year doing - working on getting my weight much further over the front. Having said that, I found this much easier to achieve with the steeper head angle. I was half wondering though that I needed...
Apologies if this topic has been done to death, but I'm weighing up options for a new big bike as unfortunately my evil undead has done something completely unexpected of an evil and cracked in three places. Warranty/crash replacement is a no go as Evil don't have any undead front triangles...
