    Electrolytes

Skookum makes a good point. If you get your body running up to speed it frees up your mind to focus on the task at hand, the race, the obsticle the whatever. Bottom line: keep your fluids and electrolytes in balance the most economical and efficient way possible. That way you can keep the...

Reflux, The heart burn comes from unbuffered salts ie. sodium and potassium. That's why the calcium carbonate helps.

    Electrolytes

I guess everyone is different and I tried most of the things recommended but finally found what works best for me. It's cheap and easy. It may have to do with where I ride. Georgia is hot and humid. I sweat like a mad man. I can loose 4 pounds in a two to three hour ride and that's with...

    how much water?

Urine. Yep, watch the color of your urine. If it's darker than clear yellow or you're not making urine, drink more. If it looks like it did on the way in, back off on the fluids. When not training let thirst be your guide. When on the bike stay ahead of anticipated fluid loss. Keep it simple.

    Electrolytes

I posted a few months back about electrolytes and being chronically depleted bythe end of summer. I got several great recommendations. I ended up with generic electrolyte tabs found at: www.readykor.com/medicine/electrolytes. The tabs have 250mg of sodium, 15mg of potassium and 18 mg of...

    a new toy

My friend is a PT and he gave me one simple exercise that has helped my trail ridding. Kneel on the ball, using a wall or something to stabilize yourself. Basically sit on your calves on the ball. As your balance improves get the the point where you can rise from the squatted position to a...

    Pain in Upper Chest?

Just saw your post. I don't know your age of fitness level but anytime I hear the words "chest pain" I worry. There are different types; the ones that are benign are nothing to worry about but the ones that are not can kill you. It would be worth a trip to your family doc to have this checked...

    Banana chips vs. fresh fruit?

Chips are ok for off bike nutrition but for on bike go with the real deal. The problem with the chips are that they are fried. They then coat them is sugar to get them sweet again. It takes water for your body to metabolize them and the amount of nutrition you reap from them is minimal. So...

    Snap crackle & pop.

I'm a PA in Orthopeadics and have seen most joints make noise despite the age of the patient. The bottom line is, if it isn't painful then you're ok. Most joints make noise for various reasons, most are benign. So, don't worry, just keep on snap, crackle and popping down the trail.

I'm going out to Utah next month. I'll be in Huntsville, near Eden. Where are the good single track rides in that area?

    Running Routes

I don't know what your budget is but Target sells a small GPS unit you can strap to your arm that logs milage, inclination, rate of speed and all sorts on interesting stuff for about $99 before tax. I believe it is is called a "Fore runner" or something like that. I have a similar unit for my...

Finally picked up a bike, what can you tell me about it?

This bike is ok for its intended purpose but I think you will end up spending a lot of money on upgrades to make it into an XC ride. If XC is your true intention my advise would be to sell this bike and buy an XC specific bike. As I scan the photo's you posted everything is built heavy which...

    Mavic 717 questions

My ride weight is about 190 and a friend of mine is over 200 and we both run the 717's. I've had mine a full season and so far they are no worse than anything I've had in the past. Like all rims you need to maitain the tension and true. I think they are worth the money. I'm sure you could...

    Electrolytes

I read your post about V8, OJ and bannanas. Yes in deed they are inexpensive. I try to eat early on the day of a ride so that by the time I'm riding my food has digested and I don't have a lump of undigested food competing for space in my abdominal cavity. I need that space for lung...

    Electrolytes

Yeah, I saw the post about the 50 miler where a guy recommended calcium tabs. I have noticed on long rides my gut begins to ache on a steady diet of Cliff bars and gels. I tried the calcium and it helped. The question is, how much sodium and potassium is necessary? I would think you need to...

    Electrolytes

Every summer I get chronically electrolyte depleted. I use the gatoraide etc but it doesn't keep up with my rate of sodium, potassium loss. Does anyone use an electrolyte replacement tablet? I've seen and used some but they are expensive, rediculous, you can buy a pound of salt for a buck! I...

    Rotors

I looked at the Al disc info at Stan's. Hundred beans a disc, whoa! You have to use minimally abrasive pads too. Hmm, is that an oxymoron there? Not recommended for riders over 150lbs. That counts me out. You could probably save the same amount of weight if you used Ti hardware. Like...

    Rotors

I have two questions about rotors. For XC riding is there a big difference in the performance of the 160 versus 180 mm rotors? Again, for XC use, are the aluminum rotors worth the extra money?
