I've used the Excavators and although they are quite good, the DHR2 seems to bite better in soft ground. Plus, sticky rubber doesn't hurt, comparing it to Kenda's rubber compound.
My full intention was to discretely take the subject matter from the DHR2 to talking about Schwalbe's sidewalls. Looks like I achieved my main directive.
Minion DH-R II. Holy crap one ride on the steepest trail I know of and I could barely make it slide even on off-camber corners. I probably shouldn't be divulging much but damn this is THE measure of what a rear DH tire should be.
I remember a race where ACC crashed, rolled down a hill with her bike tumbling with her. She crawls back up carrying her bike and still wins by about 12-15 seconds.
That either showed how good she was or how much of a joke women's DH used to be. I think the latter unfortunately. There should...
Anyone remember Dustin Adams? He used to be Canada's top DH racer back in the early 2000's with a few WC and Norba podiums plus National championships. Well, it used to be his training trail way back then. Kinda in disrepair but still usable. I also have an off shoot that runs directly into my...
Shoei's are very good helmets, definitely nicer fit and finish than a TLD or mostly any other helmet for that matter. If you have an opportunity to pick one up, do so.
If you hit a steep fall line dry or moist loamy track where panic braking is key to making it down in a controllable manner, that's when you see the merit of the HR2 and DHR2. If you don't have trails like that then you could get away with other designs. Fortunately in BC those types of trails...
Some of the cheaper helmets look pretty bad, but mostly any of the higher end stuff is not only good looking but amazingly light. Did I mention they offer way better protection? That too. Other than TLD pretty much all mtb helmets look like something my cat pukes up (isn't that a colorway?)...
A little bit of loose but mostly hardpack, then try to get a tire that has larger knobs (larger surface area) with straight braking edges. So the DHF is a good choice for that. Stay away from smaller knobs if you can. Too squirmy.
Does anyone remember when Minnaar raced the Roof of Africa? That's one gnarly race.
I used to race DH, now I race enduros and hare scrambles. I think the latter is much better for your mountain bike skills than motocross is. After all you are riding trails in enduro racing.
Dirtbike...
I read an article (I think in some medical journal that my wife gets) that athletic ability doesn't deteriorate that much even into your 40's and 50's. The main difference in outcomes are results in time in. Simply put, in general younger people can afford more time to train than us older folk...
