awesome review and write-up, neil!
i had the same experience on my first trip earlier this year to timberline. it's definitely resort that needs a lot more exposure and riders!
i posted the following review of the area to our local (more XC oriented) forum back in 07/10/11...
nice signage! :thumb: is there a map of all the trails out there? POST IT UP for PROMOTION!
unfortunately, i won't be able to make it back until mid/late august to timberline but i will definitely be back before this season! i'll be at highland on july 29-31 and then chillin at the beach...
between the couple of forums i'm on... i can't take any more "social networking" to add a FB account to my name, but whatever Timberline can do to get the word and out and BLOW UP is good news!
not sure i can make it out there again this weekend, if not... i won't be able to make it back...
not sure if this part of the forum gets much traffic anymore, but...
THANKS for a great day at Timberline on Saturday. it was my first trip to Timberline and they have a great network of all natural terrain with a nice variety of roots, rocks, drops, some jumps and good old WVa mud! we...
thanks! i know snowshoe can tend to "create" it's own weather at times... i've been there under a few "red alert" storms that shut the whole mountain down which seems to come out of nowhere sometimes!
i would just rather wait until later in the season if a good number of trails aren't ready...
any locals or people who know people that work at snowshoe have any intel on what trails they plan to have open this weekend? i don't mind riding in the mud, but i don't want to make the long drive out there if a good number of trails are going to be closed and would rather postpone the trip...
i did similar trips in 2006 and 2008.
here are my ride reports:
5 NE resorts in 5 days - 2006
NE resort tour 2008
IMHO, HIGHLAND is definitely worth the long drive... a group of us in the NoVaDC area have been making the trek about 2 times each season for long 3 day weekends. you...
i think robert716 brings up an interesting take on helmet technology. the NFL has some specially designed helmets to reduce the risk of concussion... it would be interesting to see what makes those designs better. everything that i have been able to find mentions air padding and "softening"...
Having ridden all the resorts you mentioned except Mt. Snow, I highly recommend Highland. We make the ~10 hour drive up from the DC area 1-2 times a season to ride and that is with Diablo & Snowshoe within 4.5 hours of us.
Highland is perfect if you are into DH & DJing and has an amazing...
Thanks for all the responses and stories of your personal experiences.
I have a neighbor who was a PT (specifically sports medicine) and has experience with treating concussions. He tested my sensitivity to light, strength in my arms, legs, neck, and some mental tests to see how I was doing...
So, this past weekend I was riding some local trails and took a spill that resulted in me smacking the back of my head into a tree (while wearing a full-face helmet). From recollections of a buddy of mine following me, I suddenly spun around like a wide receiver getting tackled in mid-air and...
Any idea if the mountain wil be open tomorrow with the forecast of 1-2 inches overnight? We are planning to leave the DC area around 6ish to arrive in the middle of the night to set up camp and ride for 3 days before heading back. I'd hate to get there and not have the resort open due to...
anyone have any intel on what trails, dirt jump lines, etc... will be open this coming weekend (nov 5th - 7th)? we are coming from the DC area and it's a long trip and we might divert a day of riding to hit up something along the way if some of our favorite trails/lines aren't open.
i'll try to make a trip out there when i get back from BC. i'm leaving for florida this friday and when i get back from that trip, i'm in BC for a 2 week trip. i'm sure that will give us a lot of building ideas to bring back.
i will be in touch and will hopefully plan a trip out to...
how are the lifts (method and speed) and how many trails are going to be open this weekend?
i've got my bike ready to go (well, it's functioning) and the cooler will be packed with some fine beverages and snacks!!
it looks like stiff, mobius, and i are going to make a day trip up to 7 springs tomorrow to check it out. i can't wait to ride an entirely (new to me) resort!
