I'll play this game...
IMO it's more rider dependent than area dependent. Before I started building my own my favorite bike when I lived out east was an Ellsworth Specialist, which they billed as a trials/4x bike (though no good trials bike would have an HTA that slack). With a 5" travel...
Fork - Tapered steerer Fox TALAS Terralogic QR15. 44mm offset. 120mm - 95mm. Set for 40mm sag at full extension
HT - 70.5°
420mm CS length ctr to axle
off the top of my head I think it has a 310mm BB height with 2.2 tires at full sag.
I'm using the prototype cup for the new lower...
well crap. I can't seem to add images through flickr anymore since they changed the layout. There are a bunch more pictures to a buddy's flickr page until I have time to take pics of my own.

As a builder, I appreciate your zeal but the economic study of the shirt that Toshi posted shows that he does get it, he just doesn't partake in it and is stirring the sh!t.
I used to be a financial analyst for the Navy (as a contractor). Blowing through delivery dates and going over...
I totally understand why it's hard to wrap your brain around a 5 year wait time. People make an emotional connection with the brand. It's not about the final product anymore. The same scenario exists in the custom guitar world, supercars...you name it. There may even be a highly sought out...
I wish I had the space and $$ for job specific tooling. I've been looking for a reasonable horizontal mill to use as a dedicated main tube mitering station but the PNW is machine starved compared to the mid west and east coast. When they show up, they're 3-4x their value. If we move back east...
snipped a lot of good stuff about LEAN manufacturing
There's a balance here and the balance point is going to be different for every builder. That balance point between machination/handwork is likely going to evolve with the builder as well. I'm firmly in the camp that I can't do a good...
Toshi, is your trumpet making essentially making a prototype every single time he builds a trumpet? Are the industry standard fitments of trumpets constantly changing? Does he/she have to constantly take time to develop and make new tooling to be able to build trumpets to the new standards...
Find time to ride without taking time away from family or work (the side effect should be to get in better shape and to drop some weight)
Put together a CX team and a MTB team.
Get something on my commuter bike by springtime that can carry my daughter OR build a sweet longtail that can...
check out the Oval Concepts R701 Shallow as well. I have the same issue with the FSA bars being too narrow at the hoods. I like the Oval bend better and it's actually 44cm wide.
I'll have to go look at my derailleur pile to confirm compatibility, but if you're going through them that fast, why not have your shop order a ten pack of pairs of the cheapie Shimano pulleys? Should run you about $20.
Those sealed bearing pulleys really are crap in the mud. And most of...
Those pulleys will be toast halfway through the first muddy race of the season. Do you remember the Bullseye/Carmichael/Control Tech etc sealed bearing pulleys from the mid 90's? The seals aren't good enough to keep the muck out. They fill up with goo and then start rotating around the pulley...
I don't but I'm heading that way for all future tubular builds. As I said, I've heard good things. Mavic seems to have taken a turn for the worse in the past few years. For all the alu clincher wheels I've been building (with rare exception) I've been sticking with DT/Swiss rims but I don't...
Either the Reflex or the Crono. Not a big fan of Velocity product here. I've had several problems with brand new rims from them over the years. Great company though and perfect customer service record with me.
But those were Zipps...just sayin
Reflex is a decent rim. I've seen quite a few develop cracks around the eyelets after a few seasons though. I hear good things about, but have no experience with, Ambrosio Nemisis rims.
Finally got my commuter bike home. I don't actually have to commute anywhere, but I did get to do a grocery run last night in the rain. The front rack is quite handy, I can see why they're so popular around here. Still waiting for the cog for the belt drive but with any luck, it'll show up...
I don't think the dry conditions make a good reason to stay away from carbon if you like and can afford them. I absolutely hammered my Edge 2.38's last year including riding a full lap with a flat in the gravel pit (Barlow? I can't remember the venue) at my race speed. At the Wilsonville...
