Not sure of the bearing layout but it could be plausible that excessive bolt tension could pull the bearing through causing delamination, good chance most of the fiber is wrapped axially. Could also just be lateral forces or poor manufacturing. Either way, seems sub optimal.
So if I'm understanding your hypothesis correctly, you're advocating for him wrapping it with gorilla tape?
