    Bike: 2012 Intense M9 (large)
    Fork: 2013 Dorado Pro

    Frame Head tube = 127mm
Headset lower stack height = 4mm
Headset upper stack height = 8mm
Total length of frame + headset = 139mm

    Fork steerer tube = 158mm
    Fork upper crown = 12.7mm

So if my math is right, this leaves me with 6.3mm of steerer tube protruding out of the top of the upper crown when everything is buttoned up.

Is this a safe amount of excess steerer tube?

I attached a super-high-tech 1D image for clarification. Thanks in advance!

I'm assuming you are using an integrated stem? If so I don't see why that wouldn't be safe.

Should have mentioned that..Yes...a direct mount stem will be used. So only the top crown will be clamping the steerer tube.

why would you want anymore head tube than that? As long as it protrudes beyond the upper crown I don't understand the concern....

You really only need 2-3mm, you're good.
