heidi, i took a look at the site. oh man i would love to do that. there's no way i'd be ready for it by then, let alone manage to get there by february. now i'm thinking i should move to arizona by next summer so i can train for the 2003 race.

even though i'm not in danger of getting laid off, i am so in need of that move/life change you were talking about. thanks for sharing this.

Glad to hear you're hooked JOJO! I also want to stress that this is THE perfect course for first timers as it is not extremely technical, no really steep, steep climbs or downhills. It's mostly just flat, to slightly inclined singletrack around cacti and scrub brush. I am serious, this course would be perfect!! I will be there on either a coed team or riding solo and would love some company!

Well, I should probably be put in an institution for this, but.....OK, I'm in. I'm gonna need A LOT of assistance from you and anyone else regarding preparing for it being I've never raced! Especially considering that it means training during the winter!

So how do those 24 hr. things work anyway? Is it kinda like a relay, like you do a loop and then the next person on your team does a loop, etc. etc.?

(man, do I sound like newbie or what?!)

KB - you got it. The goal of your team is to do as many laps as possible (or as little as possible). You take turns riding the course one at a time and pass a little baton to each other after every lap. You do this for 24 hours stright - goin from noon Saturday to noon Sunday. It will be fun!!

24hrs of Old Publo last year was the best 24hr race I've ever done. Its alot smaller than races like Moab, but its a hundred times better. The course rocked, 15 mile loop, a little bit of climbing but none of it really techical, unbeliveable single track, and great weather conditions. It was the absolute perfect course for a single speed, the first 3-4 miles through the cactus slalom were the best. The promotors did such an awesome job getting everything together, the had more swag than i've ever seen at a race, they had the port-potties serviced halfway through the night (you don't even know how nice this was), and they had HOT TUBS!!!!

Watch out for the suicidal mice at night!!!

Yah, I kept hitting the same one that was dead in the middle of the singletrack last year. Gross.

It's about a 7 hour drive for me. Last year I flew into Tucson and then used my parent's van to drive to Oracle.

The cost depends on the airline, right now, they will most definitely charge you. Most airlines charge $50-75 each way. I actually had my teammates drive my bike and gear out last year. I'm a rockstar, I flew. Sorry KB, but Captain Cogset and I are probably going to use the van again to camp in. It has a queen bed in the back and is nice and warm.:D Who else is on your team??

Well....we're workin' on it.
Obviously me an HOHO....oops! I mean JOJO. ( :D :D :D )
She's got a couple people in her spin class that might be interested. I don't think that's for sure yet.
And then I've got a few friends that are all very good riders...I'm hoping one of them will be interested. We'll see.

Hahaha, I didn't even see the humor in what I wrote.

By on you toes I was refering to helping keep me awake a night. You'd see these little tiny eyes all over the place, and I swear they just run toward the light. So you were constantly trying not to crush the little guys.

I gave up trying. I know, I'm cold and ruthless, but dammit I didn't want to swerve and hit once of those barrel cacti!

SS, are you doing the race again this year??

I'm trying to get a bunch of friends together around here and get a few teams entered. It was so much fun last year there is no way I'm going to miss it.

Speaking of Old Pueblo, have you heard from Jim? Is he going solo or will he be a part of "Team Ride It Like You Stole It", once again?

Never fear, Inkpad is waiting eagerly in the wings, doing 100+ mountain miles per week. Friggin animal, that guy. We'll be just fine. Do they give Jerseys for first?

Yeah, Inkpad would be perfect too, that guy is fast! They didn't give jerseys last year but who knows this year. The trophy they gave me was SWEET though! Nevermind that he looks excited!

Hahaha! I remember seeing that on Socalmtb. Funny! BTW- I'm buying a cheapie road bike this Friday so I can start collecting a bit more mileage during this potentially rainy season. Gotta be in shape for the 24!

You can sometimes fly your bike cheaper if you lie and tell the baggage checker that it's display or presentation materials for a conference. The airline will tell you that the extra charge is because the package is so big, but I found that it's cheaper to fly a musical instrument of larger dimensions than it is to fly a bike. Tell them it's a harp. That would probably only work if you have it in a nice case instead of a box.

You can check the regs for different airlines here:

I've always wondered about this. I have a huge case that carries both me and the Captain's bikes so this isn't an option...unless I tell them it's a friggin piano. However, if you lied about what it was would they still pay you anything if the "bike" was lost or damaged?

That's a chance I'm not willing to take.
You have to consider the risk, know that there's a possibility you might lose it (them), and decide if it's worth taking the risk.

Another option is to call some local shops and see if they'll let you ship your bike to them before the race. Some will even assemble it and have it ready when you get there.

My friend is the mgr of this shop:

http://domenicscycling.com/site/index.cfm?Loader1

Give them a buzz or e-mail and see if they will let you ship your bike to the shop and have them build it for you. This is a very reputable shop that services both MTN and Road.

If it was only a bike or two I'd say just ship them to my house and I'd set them up, but I can see that becoming a large headache when i'm trying to prepare my own stuff for the race. Concidering the night before the race last time I was running around like a chicken with it's head cut off cause I had just noticed my rear X-Max rim was pulling nipples through in 2 different places.
