Me and Mrs. Dirtrider are planning our next European Vacation for next year and Austria seems to have been the selection this go round. Any monkies ever been? Have any recommendations? Any info. Just bought the Rick Steves travel book which worked really well when we went to France/Italy/Switzerland last year so I will be routing through that, but other first world experience is liked in conjunction w/ the book.

I have only been to Vienna twice but really nice city with a lot of history. The country side is beautiful too but I don't have any recommendations for where to go.

Salzburg is stiflingly cute and IMHO worth the trip. We did an airbnb there and it was awesome compared to tiny expensive euro hotels.

If you're near the Rhine valley in spring you can go to "heurigens," where they serve the fresh wine of the season in huge glasses (viertels) with super-Austrian snacks like bratfettbrot (Bread with roasted lard and garlic) and stuff.

If you want to see statues of dead Turks, Vienna's a good place for that.

Hungary etc. aren't far if you're in Austria either.

I am having editing probs so new post re: Salzburg: May Day at the Mirabelle palace will win points with the Mrs., and the opening of the outdoor gardens of the Austustinerbrau shouldn't be missed. That's magic with liters of beer.

Mirabelle in spring: http://www.salzburg.info/en/sights/fortress_palaces/mirabell_palace_gardens

If you're into photography, there's a place called Fotohof that's pretty cool to drop into. Studied with the one American guy who helped found it.

The castle is cool too, as is Untersberg. The Salzkammergut lakes region around it is worth a tour, too. I've heard the ice caves are spectacular and there's even a ski train that leaves Salzburg and takes you right to gondolas in the Alps.

I was over there a little over 10 years ago for a crazy ski vacation. We stayed in Bad Weisse Germany which is about 10min away from the German/Austrian border. It was a nice quiet little town next to a decent size lake. We skied at 3 different places in Austria (also 1 in Germany and 1 in Italy). The 3 places we skied at in Austria were Axamer Lizum Resort (near Innsbruck), Penken Resort (near Mayrhofen), Hochalmlifte Christlum. We did a little sight seeing in Innsbruck and Mayrhofen after skiing and those places were pretty cool. Also skied Garmisch Germany and did a little sight seeing in Mittenwald Germany which are fairly close to the German/Austrian border as well.

We just had a short stay in Austria, but I can confidently recommend about six hundred different baked goods in Vienna.

The Hotel Sacher is worth it for a slice of Sacher Torte. None of the imitations we had even came close. And Cafe Central has some awesome baked goods as well.

So, I'm back to work, resulting in me having time to answer questions.

To give helpful information a bit more details about your trip would be good. Do you want to ride, do you want to travel by public transport or rental car, what's your budget, do you want to visit museums, exhibitions, concerts, special food and/or beverage interests, do you want to stay at one place and do the traveling from there, etc.?

In the east there is Vienna. The city itself is worth a trip, as there is the highest density of cultural offerings and the like. Also lots of history to be found. But if you are also interested in outdoor activities and landscapes you will have to look further west, at least a bit. Graz, second largest City, has a good mix of all. A historic oldtown, lots of trail riding, lots of good food in and outside the city, very good wines in the south, lots of hiking possibilities close by, two bike parks relatively close by, on Mt. Schoeckl, a 20 min drive, the other Maribor, a 45 min drive, Schladming is a ~2 hr drive, me :fans: ...

Salzburg was mentioned before, the other history and music rich town. Good brews can be found there too. Saalbach and Leogang are relatively close by, as are the higehr mountains of Austria.

Just give me some input and I will respond.

Italy/south Tyrol
If you want to go to the western part of Austria, Innsbruck is a nice little city with an airport.
From there you can explore the Tyrolean alps. Hiking and biking is pretty big in this area. If you bother to drive for an hour or 1.5, you can also go to South Tyrol in Italy and discover the dolomites.

But yeah, more information is needed.

I love Austria and have been there numerous times in the last 4 years (I live in Stuttgart, Germany).

We have stayed in a couple places whilst visiting Salzburg - The coolest was the Von Trapp Family house (you can book rooms there online).

If you would like trip tips etc, lemme know.

We took a 5 hour cycling tour of the area in and around the city

This was a cool place to visit... but the best place for beer and food is the Augustiner Brau

The Austrian Alps is my favorite place in the World.
