had it fitted, but seems onlt happy in middle ring. Not Bothered about outer as gonna git a BG. But moving to granny causes chain grinding. Wondering if this is usual?

IMHO the Crud chain device (AKA D.C.D.) is not worth having.As you say the chain rubs a lot.The only way I found to correct this is to try "tweeking" the device with a large spanner to try and slightly bend it to line up better with the chain line.

I battle for hours trying to get the bloody thing working with out rubbing! The LBS told me that I should use a bit of inner tube and wrap it around the pulley to provide a wide bed for the chain to roll on!
Taken it off and thrown it.
