what is a good (free would be nice) application to make incremental backups from an internal drive to an external?

Windows Backup works pretty darn well....
Windows backup is the best bet if you don't want to spend money. I would say spend the $50.00 and purchase Acronis, Home addition. Your best bet and works great.

That's the widows solution. For mac there are a number of great free ones out there.

I used to use Windows Backup with nary an issue. I've since purchased Acronis and am happy with that as well. It offers some nice options that were worth paying for, IMO.

it looks like starting a backup needs a blank drive...any ideas of what i should do if i've already started a backup? just wipe one start fresh?

RAID TO THE MAX like raid 6 or something.

Huh? No need for a "blank" drive to do backups... just one with enough space. What did you decide to use? Windows Backup?
