I have a Late-2008 MBP and it has served me pretty well over the years. However, it doesn't seem to be handling updates very well and it is getting slower and more glitchy as time goes by. Add to that the fact it looks like a beaten up twisted piece of aluminium from all the travelling and mishandling.

Time to get one of the new Retina MBP I think.

Question is: is there any reason to wait a while to see if there is something newer and better coming up or should I just get one of the Mid-2014 ones that sound pretty darn good already.

Anyone here see into the near future? I mean like this-year-near-future?

Yeah, if you're in the market for a MBP, they just did the Haswell processor refresh so it's as good a time as any to jump on it.
