Without a doubt a hardtail can be used for DH. It'll teach you worlds about smoothness and picking lines.

That's all I ride :D

Silly question, of course you can. It just takes more skill *puts on flame retardent suit* and is a little harsher.

A hardtail what?

A Trek OCLV 9.0? No.

Something else? Maybe.

Well, you "can" but unfortunately it's against the law in British Columbia to do that. Sorry.

no its true, under BC law you are required to have at least 150mm of travel front and rear to decend grades steeper than 30 degrees. Also for some trails, you must be this tall to enter....

Well you may be exempt but you need to get a hardtail permit. and in order to get that, you need to take the government safety course......

Yeah, it's a real shame that the B.C. gov't is so blatantly opposed to h.t. use, but the fact is, most h.t. riders are younger guys (b/c they can't afford squishy bikes) and they just can't vote! You can whine about it all you like, but until you're older, there's not much you can do about it. Kinda sucks, huh?

Mmike - I don't know a single dude who's ever gotten a hardtail permit. Far too much red tape, and the fees are ridiculous....

there is, however a cloaked & esoteric group of us who choose to ride the fabled knarled & mist-shrouded trails of the rugged canadian northwest without the aid or benefit of rear-wheel suspension devices. we ride covertly to avoid the detection & subsequent arrest by the rcmp (royal canadian mountain-bike police). why do we do it? some of us are luddites. technophobes. seeking purity of experience through simplification. some seek a more spiritual connection with the trail - feeling every stone; every root beneath our treads. some hardtail fundamentalists believe that rear-suspension users live in fear of reality - they wish to be coddled & isolated from the shocks of the real world. our numbers may be small, but we are strong in our beliefs & unity! hardtail pride!

It's definitely a tradeoff. I'm sure you remember a while back when the ban was instituted, it was actually a response to difficulties in maintaining the acceptable standards expected within the socialized medicine community. Hospitals and doctors were getting overworked. While is does suck, I think the BC community has benefitted in the long run.

They are able to ride b/c of a loophole. In BC, there is a clause in the HT law that states that a suspension seat post is technically considered a Dualie

this is either a sadistically evil force at play that makes Canada hell for people like me who love to ride a HT down a steep chute, or that this is the most elaborate yet late april fool's joke ever.

I seem to recall that the 1st NS FR bikes were ALL hardtails back in the days when all the BC guys rode were Norcos and Konas with 4" forks because they were so manuevarable.

IF the guys were kidding, this is going a little too far.
But other wise, jesus christ. Everyone knows that hardtails can glide down a steep chute much better than a dually.

no way. All it's done is drive the HT riders underground. Now if somebody gets messed up on a ht, they won't dare go get proper medical attention for fear of being busted. WAY worse now, I can't imagine how many dudes have gangrene and shriveled limbs, or worse the dreaded anal SARS.....

Yes but the course have become way more advanced, just not safe on a HT anymore.

the reason we have universal healthcare is because high-risk activities have been legislated. the research council of canada conducted an in-depth study & resolved that rear-suspension (statistically) reduced the rate & severity of crash-related mountain bike injuries. logic follows that if everyone is on dualies, healthcare will have to pay out less. (simmilar logic to legislating seatbelt & helmet use)

Oh tell me you don't mean to suggest the Canadian War on Hardtails is a misappropriation of funds simply because of a few deviants who take their safety into their own hands against the law. It's illegal and any loss of life or limb is a direct result of insubordination. Sympathy for outlaws should in no way dictate national policy.

Please. These laws exist for protection of the people. If they were followed, there would be no problems. That philosophy is working just fine for us here in the states............just fine.....................just fine.....................

Hey, you can bury your head in the sand all you want. It doesn't change the FACT that this stuff is going on. You beaurocrat-type squares are all the same, you should look at the real world around you!!!!

Thank you guys for sending the message. I don't know how many people are pissed off when they show up with their ht's to be told they have to rent a dually AND full on body armour. Always makes people grumpy. Maybe this year there will be less illegal attempts up the mountain :)

I'll never forget the time I saw a high speed chase down A-line. The "Anti Hardtail Vice Squad" was in hot pursuit of a perpetrator. The had sirens and flashing lights on their bikes and everything....

Once the finally caught him, they gave him a Rodney King-like beating. I think they were trying to make an example of him.

I have had dreams about my HT and A-line..... Like a big BMX track...

Thank god the anti-hard tail laws aren't here in California.... I would probably still be locked up after last years winter series...
