So I'm rebuilding my wheels and am wondering how to take off and put on a cassette. Are there any special tools involved? Can i do it without any prior esperience? Thanks.
Chain whips are the biggest hoax park tool has ever invented, sure they're nice to have but for a consumer to buy one is pretty absurd. All you have to do is hold the cassette with a rag and wind the lockring off with the tool. If your torquing the lockring down to the right spec you should have no problem getting the lockring off, if you're mechanic is hamfisted and you can't get the lockring off take your old chain (I'm assuming if you're replacing the cassette you're replacing the chain too) wrap it around the largest cog then pinch it with vice grips near the cog and use the vice grips as leverage.
