The initial quoted Imperial estimates for the UK were if no mitigation was performed.

The IHME estimates, which now seem a bit low (no surprise due to their curve fitting setup's assumptions and our idiocy), were assuming full social distancing.

The models may have screwed the pooch with regard to hospital bed and ventilator usage, sure, but they still were in the right ballpark generally.

To preface, I have zero compassion for protestors flaunting masks/distancing and politically grandstanding.

However I also know many people being irreparably harmed by being prevented from working even though they could do it safely, as I’m sure you are while at work.

We had a NIMBY neighbor to our current job call the health dept asking to shut us down. Inspector and cop show up, we show them we’re working safely, per CDC guidelines and State guidelines, and told them to pound sand.

If this country really wanted to show unity every non-essential business should shut down and all non-essential employees lose their pay. Until that happens I won’t begrudge people trying to survive.

i have a bit of a different perspective on the vaccine efforts, yes it takes a long time but it's being accelerated as much as possible. a different business unit within my parent company is actively working on one, and they've thrown pretty much all the resourcing they have available onto it. another part of it is that i'm just accustomed to projects with timelines that are rarely shorter than 2 years. one of the project teams i'm on i've been a part of for over 7 years, and that's not even the entire duration of the product development.

Yeah, I get that. The level of economic pain is definitely inflicted unevenly. I'm down maybe 10-15% on the year, which is infinitely better than dropping to 0% as for many out there.

Many of the people protesting are the same folks who for decades have pushed repeal of social safety nets. They are now reaping what they've sown. We have socialism for the rich, and rugged individualism for the working class here in the 'Merica. The 2016 election has only further pushed that trend, which is why after a $6,000,000,000,000 corporate bailout with very limited oversight passed, working members of the economy are getting a one time check for less than most people's monthly rent.

I'm tired of hearing about sweden because the two most important factors never make it into the discussion.

1. Generally speaking every country has a more educated population than the US
2. No other place (cept for anti 5g UK) allows complete bullshit to be passed off as news like we do

When the swedish gov't says 'don't be an idiot' everyone there has kind of a general idea of what they mean. When the US gov't says don't be an idiot, america says 'fuck you, hold my beer'

Plus there's nothing going on with swedish death rates that indicates it was handled better. When protests happen organically, and not spurred on by the Dorr Brothers and Betsy DeVos in Michigan, literally overnight with a bunch of other states happening concurrently, I'll be able to take them seriously. Those dumbfucks should be protesting the lack of ramping for testing equipment which allows the economy to open back up, and the fed gov't allowing multimillion dollar corporations take all the 'small' business loans.

This country thinks employment = money. We're literally printing the shit right now. Give it to PEOPLE to sit home right now, not harvard, not boeing, not mcdonalds......the PEOPLE not working. That's why those protesters can go fuck off. They're just fighting for the right to be labor slaves for steve mnuchin. They're too stupid to protest the right thing.

Atomic #MAGA Karen doesn't want to go back to work, she probably didn't have a job in the first place, she wants you to get back to work. She want's to go get her hair fixed, pick up a super venti carmel iced latte with extra whip frappacino, and Hobby Lobby to reopen so she can get another embossed bible. Fuck these protester clowns and the 60K dodge pickups they rode in on. I wont have job this time next year because of these mouth breathing, illiterate, "BuT mY FreEdUM!" assholes. Dumb bitches like this are the reason labels that read "Do not iron clothes while wearing them" exist.

Edit: Not only that, but these pieces of shit are going to be the ones getting nurses, doctors, and anyone else actually having to be out working now, like you and your guys, or me, sick in 6 months because they are exactly the sorts of dumb mother fuckers NOT following the sorts of proper PPE/social distancing procedures in the first place. Yeah, it sucks and it's not easy for any one. But this dumb cow and her bumpkin kin folk have no problems telling minorities to "respect authority", yet lose their shit when they have to stay inside for another WEEK. A week, that's how long this dumb bitch is supposed to stay inside in the state of CO. Another WEEK. Fucking hypocrite piece of shit trump supporter. But I repeat myself.

The Swedish premise is that the vulnerable are going to die anyway so don’t throw the baby out with the bath water.
All we’re doing is managing health care capacity, covid will have its way eventually.

And again, I’m not defending the protestors.
Discounting any idea beyond quiver in place because of them is disingenuous.

Any suggestion regarding going back to work is met with a response like yours where they’re called irresponsible and equated with wanton idiots by Corona Karens who act like they live downwind from Chernobyl.

I don’t want government money when I can work. My guys want to work too, despite my paying them the last 6 weeks to sit home. My bootstraps must be showing.

I'm all for letting them get corona and letting them drown in their own fluids. The sooner the better.

We can literally eliminate the existence of this virus if we just lock the fuck down for real for a month. I keep saying this but we're half-assing it, and as a result getting the worst of both worlds. I don't accept that vulnerable people are just going to die anyway, nor that it's just old people, and ESPECIALLY don't accept that non-fatalities that include permanent cardio-vascular damage are acceptable because it's not death. Lots of young people are dying or ending up with life-altering problems. Plus neither you nor I know what the latency of this virus is a year from now. Treating it like something else is just guessing.

You're in construction right? I live in a pretty rural setting but ain't nothin stopping construction going on right now. There's a house being built one block from me, 4 workers there every day, each very distant from one another. And that's the people's republic of california. Even here it's basically 'if you can work safely, go work'.

I wasn't blaming you for astroturf protesters that was just venting and using your post as a starting point. But you do keep echoing this 'we need to get back to work'. Whether you want gov't money or not is just your ego. If you are literally prevented from work right now, take what's normally the product of your work in its absence and get over it. This isn't just about you and your pride. People much richer than you are having no problem sucking from the gov't teat right now. Be inspired!

For you, $1200 you will have to pay back in taxes and a $5000 loan in your name for corporate America.

I fully agree that just shutting everything down is stupid. In order to 'get back to normal' as soon as possible, the plan needs to be this:

1. Shut everything down to prevent as much human to human contact as possible
2. Pay people for staying at home so they can pay their bills

Why everyone gripes about the first part but not the failure of the second part is pathetic. Talk about doing it wrong.

In a van.... down by the river
Why don’t you do the right thing and stay home. Nobody’s flying on those super spreader tubes anyway.
Yeah... you wouldn't think so, would you? I personally know of someone living 'round here that has been griping up a STORM about crowded conditions on the trails near their house... yet decided now would be a good time to fly to Hawaii with her daughter to visit her octogenarian parents.

Oh... and her husband (he did not go) has pneumonia. :wtf:
