As some may know I've been in the market for a new cross bike....I have most of the parts to build a bike so I've been looking at frames and forks. I've been racing on an aluminum Scott the last several years, and it's a good bike, but I would prefer to have a frame that would absorb the shock better. What are my options for a frame that is vertically compliant while remaining stiff under power? I would like to stay away from steel, because of the weight. I'm open to buying new or used and I would like to keep it at $1000 or less. Some of the frames/materials I've been looking into:

Ridley X-fire -> carbon
Ridley Supercross -> scandium,w/carbon stays
Salsa Chili Con Croso -> scandium
Empalla carbon SL -> alum,w/carbon stays

1000$ or less....Nevermind! lol

I think most carbon frames under 1000$ are pretty stiff. I heard that the ridley frames are at least (not first hand riding though).

I've been watching Ebay and Roadbikereview.com for carbon and ti frames.....the only way I could snag one for a grand or less is used. I've been watching this bike:

I would be willing to pay more, or buy a complete bike, if it was justified. That bike is well equipped if the prices stays under $2k

Sweet ride for sure. I am scared to buy a used frame without seeing it in person. :(

I am looking at getting a new Sycip crossdresser in the near future.

Wow, $1275 for a custom frame isn't bad at all! I wish they had more options than steal and aluminum :(

<edit> Check this guys frame out....hot

Sycips are beautiful. They're local so I see their handiwork around town all the time.

WTF is wrong with steel?

Nothing, and the more I look the more inclined I am to go that route. My main concern regarding steel was weight. Here are my concerns (in order):
1. Ride
2. Fit
3. Weight
4. Price
5. Style (I don't want an ugly bike :))

SC Stigmata? $850 (speedgoat) for PC...uses Easton EA6X tubes. I don't know if that means it will stiff as all get out or not though.

1. Ride - steel wins IMHO
2. Fit - get fitted correctly then get the right builder and this is no prob, (also assists in achieving item 1).
3. Weight - steel is not so bad in the hands of the right builder. And when #1 is so good you often overlook this anyway.
4. Price - YMMV
5. Style - Classic is classic.

If you want light weight, cheap, available now and made in Oregon, go with the Stigmata. Don't buy a carbon bike. I've yet to stumble across any nice carbon cross frames yet.

If you want something a little bit lighter, pick up one of the Lapierre scandium frames. Now that they own Redline, they are probally pretty easy to get.

Or, get a cheap Redline, and ride it until the Spooky Supertouch cx frames are ready for public consumption....

I dunno, the Ridley and Colnago bikes look nice and have the record to back it

Do you have a rough date for public consumption? Would the pricing be along the same lines as the road frame you posted?

I was waiting until I had a firm idea on this one. We are just going to build team bikes and a few samples for our distribuitors, otherwise the production frames wouldn't be shipping until The first week in October, which, I think would mean we would sit on them until next July, for the most part!

Yeah, October is a bit late.....when you get some built, and some ideas on pricing, post it up. I've got a deal worked out with Loco-gringo, so I'm set for this year; I may be interested in adding to the stable for the 09/10 cross season

I was at single speed worlds.....the single speeders up here are crazy  It's hard enough to ride the courses with gears!

Ah heck, with the price of gas still going up, I decided to pull the trigger and go ahead with a production run of our 'cross frames. Deadly ~1200gram killing machines can just as easily be built up into green grocery getters. Why not? And we'll still have the first batch done before any of the UCI races!

I've built a couple. Pretty cool, but so are lots of other bikes.
I've always liked Ritchey bikes (I always wanted a P23), but what put me off was the price; the Ritchey cross frames cost around a grand, and for that amount I could get a custom steel frame from a builder.

You have a link to those? I didn't see it on the site.

Someday I will own one of these:

I've got them in stock in a 56cm size.
:)
I really, really want one too. They're a bit fussy to build, but they go like stink. More Euro-style geo tho, might not be exactly what you like for the US.
What about the scandium version of the C50?

Hey SuspectDevice-

I know one of your cross racers, Justin Finn....he is living in Oregon while he is finishing out his Masters at OSU, very cool guy. I beat him in our cross race yesterday, should sponsored me  I'll be stoked to see his bike built (he's waiting on parts)

I'm pretty sure Justin got his bike built for last weekend. I've been on the road (Vegas, Fruita, Moab, Durango, Jersey) the last 2 weeks. I even got to visit the Nevada Test Site, including the Sedan crater, and the Rifle, CO natural gas co-exploration site.

How I justified nuclear tourism as work, well, that's up to the accountant.
