Dropping 4 ft. to flat is cake. Spend some trials time on your rear wheel. Learn to pedal kick. Now, pedal kick of the loading dock and flip those monkeys off that say you can't do it (or shouldn't). I do it all the time (on a completely rigid bike).

a. Learn how to land.
b. Buy stout rims (xc rims aren't made for this)

I've been going 6 to flat on a rigid...haven't changed a rim yet (okay, I'm a trials rider though).

Yeah, but alot of things hurt if you're not good at them. Don't worry, you jst need to work on them. Drops to flat are an exceptionally valuable skill, don't give up.
