You can get a regular gamepad like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Cordless-Rumblepad-Vibration-Feedback/dp/B0002XJBGE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1259772762&sr=1-1-spell

Lots of options if you search on it. I guess it depends on what you're comfortable with - shooters, for me, feel onerous if I'm not using a keyboard and mouse. Personally, I'd either use a wireless keyboard/mouse on a coffee table, or get something like this to rest in your lap:

I just sit in the middle of my couch with the keyboard on my lap and the mouse on the cushion next to me. Works well for me since the cushions are not sloped too much and the microfiber fabric is similar to a mouse pad. I could never use a gamepad for FPS games.
