france....

"The important thing to remember, of course, is that the terrorists in France are typical of all Muslims, while the terrorist in Colorado is a freakish violent lone wolf whose attempt to burn down a building with people inside of it is completely different from decent rightwing folks who merely identify the NAACP as the most racist organization in the USA."

I have no idea where I am
"Religion, a mediaeval form of unreason, when combined with modern weaponry becomes a real threat to our freedoms. This religious totalitarianism has caused a deadly mutation in the heart of Islam and we see the tragic consequences in Paris today. I stand with Charlie Hebdo, as we all must, to defend the art of satire, which has always been a force for liberty and against tyranny, dishonesty and stupidity. ‘Respect for religion’ has become a code phrase meaning ‘fear of religion.’ Religions, like all other ideas, deserve criticism, satire, and, yes, our fearless disrespect."

My god is a loving all powerful and all knowing. When insulted he gives strength to defend his name. In the process many may die, believers and non-believers, and many will suffer. But in the end we will be triumphant because my god is loving all powerful and all knowing.

He could smite them himself, or just not make non-believers, or enable us to converse peacefully to sort out our issues but that wouldn't demonstrate his greatness through universal suffering. So maybe the loving part sounds like bullshit, and the all knowing all powerful bit too. He just works in mysterious ways that us nitwit humans can't understand. Duherp.

Couldn't come at a worst time with plenty of nitwits marching in Germany against the islamization of Europe. Both camps of idiots are in dire need being satirized.

I bet you're a blast at parties.

These people were effectively just doing their jobs, and if they weren't, if they were too afraid of 'getting burned' then what is left of the press? When South Park backed off of showing Mohammad in a cartoon, did you think "good, that's the right thing to do. If they got murdered for a offensive cartoon, they'd deserve it."?

Whatever happened to "I do not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it"?

If you make free speech contingent on its contents conforming to your particular political stance or on possible reprisals for its utterance, you haven't really grasped the concept. Good satirists are equal opportunity offenders, and Charlie Hebdo spent a lot more time lampooning the catholic church than islamic fundamentalists.

If your reaction to this event is "Play with fire, get burned", to quote an awful phrase, then the terrorists have won.

“Those who work at this newspaper have a long and disgusting record of going way beyond the mere lampooning of public figures, and this is especially true of their depictions of religious figures.”
So the Catholics are supporting street executions of people who make silly cartoons too? Is the Catholic League going to perpetrate the next shooting of cartoonists? That's the stupidest thing I've ever read. If your faith, and your god, are so fucking fragile that they are threatened by some silly Frenchman drawing cartoons, then you don't really have faith, and your god is weak.

No. Freedom of speech, in both the political arena and in day to day life, is the right to be deliberately provocative and offensive. Freedom of speech is the right to offend, challenge, and satirize. It is the right, to poke the bear. Will the bear sometimes bite you when you do? Of course, but the bear is an animal. People who perpetuate crimes like this in France, or in Denmark, or in the US are also animals. Civilized people and societies do not commit crimes just because their feelers got hurt.

Although they are just as capable of spewing hate, the nice thing about Catholics is that they are usually drunk and pass out before they can act on it.

Yes. This is the power in humor and satire. Often, especially in the religious mind, the so called rational used to prop up belief exists in a place unreachable by reason and logic. I firmly believe that the only way to reach that place is by pointing out with either humor or satire the ridiculous aspects of such religious beliefs. And these people will find that offensive. How could they not? When someone points out how ridiculous the magic eye in the sky is you're going to be pretty damned embarrassed.
