I eat a good breakfast of MANY calories and some fat (read butter) so that I don't get that empty feeling. During my rides I consume 1oz of Hammer Gel per hour. I snack on pretzils and dried apricots. I avoid power bars as the heavy feeling I get slows me down.
I pretty much do the same thing for ultra marathons but try to eat bananas and salt tablets since there is so much more effort involved. I do about 250 calories and hour for eforts in the 6 to 7 hour range.
My next ultra is Saturday, September 21st - one week from today!
