I was looking at the numbers and for racing and gear I spent just shy of $6k last year. That doesn't include things like energy food and drink, which are always wrapped into grocery shopping. How much do you spend in a given year?

I wouldn't want to add it up. But honestly, it's probably not that much, I don't race, so no entry fees. If I had to guess, it'd probably be $1,500 or $2,000 this year maybe? Maybe less?

Couldn't say exactly....maybe $1000/year...kind of a guess, so maybe more depending on the year. I ride a good amount, but save money by not upgrading without need, buying some stuff used, not usually buying top-end stuff (e.g., Ultegra or 105 instead of DA) and generally using stuff until it falls apart.

I have no idea and I like it that way.

How would you define what you're asking anyway? Do you include travel, lodging, food, camping equipment, etc., along with obvious stuff like bikes and related gear?

<$500.

I tend to buy only as needed, and even then, I often go used or through friendly hook-ups. I don't race, which means that my biggest outlay is often related to tires and tubes. Unfortunately two of my wheelsets need to be rebuilt this year, so my budget will be significantly more.

Mine only included gear and entries. In Quicken I don't categorize traveling as cycling expenses (even though it is). You could probably add another $500 to that number. I thought for sure James would come on here and tell us that he spends $9k on bikes every year :) Oldfart has us all beat. Does that mean with age comes wisdom, money, and more bikes?? I can handle that.

All of it.

Last year we gave out 31 frames/framesets to sponsored riders (as in free frames). Thats about $28,000 at retail. Most of them got frames and forks, 8 bikes were completes... Interestingly enough, that's just about how far behind we were cashflow-wise at the end of the year.

This year I reduced our budget (in hopes that I don't have to live in a bus anymore).
It's down to 6 complete bikes, 15 frames and a $5000 cushion on top of that.
We're behind on production, so that means that there is no cash available. That's a bummer as I was hoping to use a bunch of that money to go to Brazil for Master's DH worlds. Who wouldn't want to spend their 30th birthday on a beach in Brazil?
I'm cutting down on our CX program this year- 9 frame for Clifbar, 4 bikes for the midwest BikeReg team, and 6 bikes for the NE factory team.

You'd think I'd have some bikes of my own to ride- not a chance!

I should really spend a lot less on racing, but making bikes for racing, and supporting racing is the only reason we even bother to run the business. As our production capacity opens up a bunch I feel like we will see a return on the investment. Right now I plan our racing budget 5 years in advance. It's the single biggest line-item we have outside of the Cost Of Goods sold account.

Our promotional (The account that racing is in) budget for next year, depending on the co-sponsorship relationships and the cash-flow over the winter should be about the same as this year. We are significantly cutting down on our road sponsorship and putting all of those resources towards building trails, promoting races and festivals and running camps, and clinics for Jr. Women in MTB racing.

Ha! Well, retail on it would be a lot, but I've been doing this a while, and in my position I do get a decent amount of "help" from friends. Swag whore? Maybe.
Also, don't tell my wife I spend tons of money on bike stuff, I think she can't tell the difference between them, except for when I had to replace the Felts with new bikes, but that went pretty smoothly I think.
