HP mini 110

So I've been thinking about getting a mini/netbook for a while and I was in Costco yesterday and they had THIS HP mini 110 with windows 7 starter for $350 so I jumped. I figured with Costco's awesome 60 day return policy on computers I had nothing to lose.

edited to add: it came with a 6 cell battery, 160gb hd and the atom processor

So far I have no complaints OTHER than the boot time is ridiculously long! It was long right out of the box and since then I've uninstalled the Norton it came with and installed Firefox and a trial of AVG firewall and antivirus only. My Vista laptop is the same way and I've always just lived with it.

I'm just trying to decide if I can do better with an Asus or keep this guy.

What do you think?

Asus is hit or miss with their netbooks.

Did you remove the other bloatware? That's one thing that will cause a computer to take a long time to start up. Also, something to keep in mind, netbooks aren't designed to be blazingly fast.

I looked through the apps and nothing really struck me as a resource hog.

I can live with it - I think I was just assuming it would be fast because that's what Windows 7 promises LOL

Speed is more a function of hardware than software. And windows isn't exactly known for fast bootups. If you're looking for a speedy load, just put your computer to sleep when you're done with it (as opposed to shutting down). From what I've heard win7 handles sleep mode very well, and you can go at least a week without a restart.

You can also dual boot and run Ubuntu to see how you like that. 9.10 final should be out very soon and works better for netbooks - http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=ubuntu_karmic_netbook&num=1

But again, you definitely should exchange the notebook for a 311, Ion will make a significant difference with the weak atom CPU especially now that more software is becoming GPU accelerated. You'll be able to stream high quality video properly once Adobe updates Flash.

i would recommend buy the ASUS Eee Pc 1008HA Seashell Netbook ,this one is perhaps cheaper, and it has 170gb .
That model cost the same or more with the same OS. Today I saw Officemax is selling the HP mini 110 with XP SP3 for $280 on special.

I think you can technically have up to 3GB in the 311 - I don't know if that means it has 1GB solder to the MB or you put a 4GB DIMM in and it only uses 3GB.

If you know a student and you wanted to save money, you could buy the 110 at officemax for $280 and they can order Windows 7 for $30

Win7 for students -

* This is a Digital Copy
* To get the disks it is an extra $13
* You can choose 32bit or 64bit
* You can choose Win 7 Professional (there's an area that says "Need to connect to your school's network? Click here")

If you want extra performance the next thing above atom netbooks is Celeron/Core 2 Solo/Duo ULV CPUs and some don't cost too much more and usually have larger 12-13" screens option (and even up to 15.6" - still not too heavy at 4 ish lbs with decent battery life but most still lack optical drives).
