So I moved out west about 6 months or so ago to start on this new construction project. Work started bad, I had to deal with a lot of crap and disbelief of how poorly the day to day stuff was managed. I guess I was a little naive to think that this project would run about the same way as my last project. But here, everything from procurement to safety to quality, it was all a huge tard fest. The people in each department tended to be cool (with a few exceptions), but the system as a whole really wasn't made to function smoothly. I used to be super keen to try and improve things and make life easier for everyone. Some of my efforts worked, other didn't. Plus, when you're responsible for production, quality and safety all at the same time, odds are you'll eventually become a pain in your own ass.

As time has gone by, I've learned to deal with it and just sort of go numb. I find myself saying "whatever" an awful lot. It's kind of exhausting.

A couple months back in funk of frustration, I updated my CV and used the shotgun method to see what was out there. I met with a bunch of headhunters (waste of time), and spoke with some other companies in slightly different, more specialised lines of work. None of them panned out. Also, some of the managers got shuffled around here so I got a new boss. Things improved, plus the change injected me with a renewed hope, so I just let it drop and let things ride. Things were good for a couple months, but then a bunch of people have quit. This has resulted in all kinds of confusion in the re-organisation of everything and it's been more or less one piss off after another.

Last week I got a call from one of the companies I had tried to contact a while ago. They've got sites all over the place right near where I live, and interesting ones at that.

I meet with them today. Let's hope they're on time, and on budget. And that their budget includes a nice fat salary for me. And a truck (aka shuttle vehicle). And a bunch of vacation (aka riding time). And good benefits.

Wish me luck.

Good luck! It sucks to work on projects that are mismanaged.....especially when the manager won't take your input

Good luck man.

I am still hunting for a better job since I found out there is no room for me to move up in salary at all. I applied for a few more places today. Hopefully something closer to home where I can ride my bike to work again.

My job constantly goes from good to crap on a regular basis. I can't help but to think if I went somewhere else it would be the same. Right now we are in a situation where we have really good management, things run well and our work is respected. The big problem is my current boss is a complete moron. Unless he pushes me to my breaking point I will just try to wait him out.

Yeah, I figure that the fluctuations are just a fact of life, but I figure why not shoot for the good-to-crap cycle with a shorter commute?

Well I think that was just about the best interview I've ever had. I let the guy do most of the talking for the first 20 mins or so, but I managed to interject at just the right moments to get him to answer some of the questions I planned to ask without actually asking the question.

When he asked me if I had any questions I asked all the ones I wanted to. (thanks to MMike and the dude at Starbucks for lending me a pen and some receipt paper)
But rather than some boring list of Q&A, it turned into hour and a half converstion about our past experiences on other jobs and how each of the points I brought up will be addressed on future/current projects.

I expect an offer early next week. Let's hope I'm as awesome as I think I am.

Well. It is now "early next week" and no news. What to you HR monkeys think? If I call them do I look like a desperate sucker who will take any ol' crappy offer? Cause I won't you know...

I'm getting antsy.

Following up with your interview after a week isn't a bad thing. In fact, I highly recommend you do it. Sometimes the interviewers are just busy mo-fo's and it shows them that you are serious about the job. Just throw in the "I'm just following up with our interview last week...." and you are golden.

Don't chase them. If they're interested, they'll contact you.
Well this is just great...

I have seen hiring folks flip out when they get a call from someone thay interviewed. I have never bothered to think out why that reaction exists.

When we're hiring, the selection process can be pretty tedious - from my own viewpoint, sorting it out is sufficiently bothersome that I don't need an "are we there yet?" call. Besides, if we're still dithering or just making sure or whatever, I don't have much information to offer to the caller.

And Mike: You're fired. :bonk:

Well, the guy who I interviewed me was the VP of the company and he told me that he had to discuss with the owner and president. The owner was currently away on vacation but due back at work this past Monday.

I don't think I'm waiting on an HR department to get it's act together in this case. I'm hoping it's more just a case of the president having a lot on his plate fresh back from vacation.

I think it depends on the person who your dealing with. Personally I don't need that phone call from you. I'm well aware that I interviewed you, if I want to hire you I will, even if I do drag my ass for a while.

Good luck though, hopefully they are just dragging there ass on this.

So I called on Monday and left the guy a voicemail. Still no news back. I'm thinking this might be a bad sign.

He could be on vacation. Its a big vacation time.
Yeah, I've thought of that. I'm hoping this is just a little oversight on his part and that he'll at least call me back to let me know what their intentions are. If not, they're not giving me the impression that they're the type of company I'd like to work with anyway.

A shred of hope remains. Man, I'd love the cut my commute. Evening rides beckon...

So get this. They guy who interviewed me just called and wants to meet up again. They've won the contract we discussed (which I didn't realise wasn't already a lock...) and he wants me to meet the owner.

This could be good.

Imagine how sh*tty the rest of the lot are that they had to call you back a month later.

Good luck man. It always takes us longer to hire people than we anticipate...something always seems to creep up that slows down the process.
