one of my goals is to design and build my own frame by graduation (next june). I'm going to start designing it this summer, and i'm also going to learn to weld. My question is this: if I use the FSR link design, can i get in trouble? or is that only if i try to sell a bunch of them? I can't imagine specialized hunting me down over a one-off frame for personal use, but i'm just curious to know if this sort of thing is ok.

If you build and sell the frame only within Europe, then no-one can touch you. I think that the only markets affected by the FSR patent are the North American and Asian.
