Mine is a 1 year old entry level basic smartphone - nothing special - but most importantly it is cheaper than yours, $25/month and coverage is decent :weee:

I'd rather spend my money elsewhere.

Do you realize that "my phone is cheaper than your phone" is exactly as pointless as "my phone is better than your phone"?

Nope. Cheaper is an economic fact and its carrier dependent - my carrier is cheaper and I have no option for comparable models to the overpriced carriers. What is a better phone varies by user.

    in other news...

i put cm9/ics on my touchpad over the weekend. camera isn't working yet, and the accelerometer is buggy, but i can live with that for now. runs smoother at the hardware's stock clock speed than webos did overclocked.

My phone allows me to communicate with others through multiple interfaces. It also can hold down papers in moderately strong winds. I am clearly the superior consumer as shown by my wise product selection.

    No, syadasti's.

Simultaneous flatulence and belching in a crowded room isn't "communicating through multiple interfaces."

Its the first tier of the first revision of the Virgin Mobile Beyond Talk plan (new accounts have slightly higher rates). Its a contract-free prepaid plan on Sprint's network. Their highest phone is average compared to the main carriers offerings - Motorola Triumph (its really a Huawei), I have an LG Optimus V which was their first decent android phone. Their phones are loaded with stock android which is better than most postpaid carrier using corrupted versions of android.

Sprint's other prepaid option, Boost Mobile has a slight different selection, their best handset is the mid-range LG Marquee.

There is a third option on Sprint's network called Ting (from tucows) which has high-end handsets (Galaxy S2 and Motorola Photon) but service isn't quite as cheap.

Finally there is the hippy carrier on Sprint (also with high-end handsets) but rates more on par with Sprint itself, Credo Mobile.

You can port your number from your old carrier to any of these options.

iphones are notorious for breaking when dropped just a few feet. That is why you will never see one without a guard.

Lithium ion battery failures and recalls are old hat in electronics (or anyone familiar with cheap Chinese LED bike light systems) . Sony, Dell, HP, Apple, and others have all recalled millions of products for the same problem throughout the years.

Yeah, but first time a phone has been banned from all US flights. At least I can still take my iPhone on a plane :)

Lion batteries have been banned and grounded planes numerous times, this isn't a new thing if you're paying attention.

No, this is something new. A phone, which people have on their person, is now banned from all flights. There's all kinds of Li batteries already in there, like the card readers and i-pads the flight attendants have. To ban a phone entirely from US flights is unprecedented.

Nope, first linked url flight ban a decade ago for Apple and Dell laptops because of the millions of recalled Sony Lion cells. The bans are for the dangerous defective cells, not the devices they power which aren't the problem. You don't have a clue if you think otherwise:

Concerns about fire hazards posed by overheated laptop computer batteries have prompted three international airlines to stop passengers with Dell Inc. and Apple Computer Inc. laptops from using the batteries in flight."

Prompted 3 international airlines, due to recommendations.

The samsung deal was an Emergency Order put out by the DOT (through the FAA) today, banning the phones from airplanes. Again, not the same thing.

This is still the same safety/technical issue as the Sony cell ban in Apple and Dell laptops a decade ago and the Dreamliner grounding.

And due to the hazard of the lion cells, they banned them as cargo this year, I linked that and further: http://www.iata.org/whatwedo/cargo/dgr/Pages/lithium-batteries.aspx

This article spells it out concisely since you need further explanation of these bans and groundings, it's older but expanding problem with the widespread use of cheap lion cells in any device and cargo:

IATA is not a regulatory agency. FAA is. The FAA has had strong recommendations previously, based on the same guidelines as the IATA, but again, to simply prohibit bringing a certain model of phone on all flights, is something new. This is an emergency order, not a recommendation.

Yes, you are prohibited from carrying spare batteries, that is not new.

Yes, the problem of exploding batteries is not new, but outright banning a certain popular mainstream electrical device that people carry on their person and that they assumed would be fine (as in not bought on some sketchy ebay site) is new. If this happened with I-pads, it would be crazy, since many are used by the cabin and flight crew. They'd have to go to paper-backups, which they may not be prepared for (there was a time when they had to have paper backups, but that has passed).

It's a single recalled model and it is the same technical issue that the massive Apple/Dell recall had with Sony lion cells a decade ago. It's not the laptop, smartphone, or 787 that caused the problems. This is clearly not a new safety/technical issue - end of story.
