You can reserve in advance and get a bike from Santa Cruz directly. Wilder Ranch which is right there is okay, but not anything close to the best in Santa Cruz. If we can get Josh to respond, he is a great person to show you around the legal trails.

Keep me posted. I can show you around some trails out there if I have time.

Thinking about renting a bike and riding in the area
Check out the Santa Cruz factory demos. For $40 you get 4 hours on a brand new shiny top of the line SC rig and you can ride from the factory to Wilder Ranch or the UCSC trails. They don't want you taking the bikes up to Demo though. Probably cause it takes more than 4 hours to get out there and ride. Only problem is that lots of other people like the demo program so it's booked pretty far in advance.

UCSC and Soquel Demonstration Forest rock
UCSC is currently riding incredible and I have not seen any rangers or five0 fucking with the hundreds of people riding the trails on any given weekend. Demo was pretty good as of a few weeks ago.

And 99% illegal
You're thinking of the UCSC trails. Demo is legit.

Wouldnt you rather surf?
Pretty cold for surfing unless you're a big wave rider trying to catch a 30ft winter swell out at Mavericks.
