For flats, many people will recommend 5.10 impact's. When I started I didnt want to shell out the cash, so I tried old van's, etnie's, etc. Eventually I bought a pair of 5.10's and Im kicking myself for not getting them sooner. The grip is amazing, and they protect your feet a bit better.

5.10 impact FTW!

for flats, without a doubt the 5.10s. Same here, I didn't want to spend the cash but I am glad I did. Worth every penny.

5.10's rule if not using Vans for flats. If you want to cut down on some green back (dough) and still get a pair of 5.10's, then get the 5.10 Rennie's pictured below. They are awesome shoes for DH/FR and are a little more cheaper than the other High Impact 5.10's. I semi-pro DH raced for 6 years and did some FR competitions from time to time until I retired last year, but I still get my almost daily FR game on, and I always wear my 5.10 High Impacts or either my 5.10 Rennie's High Impacts when I am thrashing the trails.
