is this the same $11mil race that people complained about not having mt. stages?

9/16/08* Denver, CO to Buena Vista, CO 120 miles -- I'll go watch that !! :D

However, 120mi is almost a direct shot. Sounds like they'll avoid Lookout Mt. which in many ways is similar to Alp du huez :( It's much more a really long steady climb without a much steeper sections to divide the pack up... assuming they basically take hwy 285.

Still, very cool.

Well, before I don't think there was a route map or anything, they must have switched it up though after collecting input.

I heard the promoter hates Oregon. Called the residents a "bunch of dirty, unwashed, poor, freedom-hating communist hippies" or something like that.
I have to say, I don't disagree...

Aero helmets should also be required equipment on mountain stages.
Only if they are the ones with the giant face mask that cover half your face.

You know, I think we're really onto something here. We should launch our own race, the "Tour of the USA" or something, 1 stage in each state, with super-long air transfers between them.
Stage 1: 72km TTT in San Francisco. Downtown SF, hills, trolley tracks, the works.
That night: Air transfer from Oakland to Detroit
Stage 2: Runs from Detroit, MI to Holland, MI, all on highways
That night: Amtrak train transfer from Kalamazoo, MI to Elkhart, IN
Stage 3: South Bend, IN to Toledo, OH
That night: Air transfer from Cleveland, OH to Seattle, WA

I would sit here and type out 47 more stages, but you get the picture.

No rules on bikes, ride whatever you like, 8lb bikes, sure, switch to a fully faired bike with motorcycle tires for the descents, then to recumbents for the long flat stages.
This could kill!

I like where you're headed.

Second to last stage: Ice crit in Alaska.
Last stage: Individual time trail in Miami.
Back-to-back days, no rest.

I was thinking a 200km slog across thawing permafrost might do the trick. People running 4" wide tires to avoid sinking in too deep.

With all of this travelling, each team would need a supplemental sponsor to manage logistics.

For example, Team Slipstream/Chipotle, supported by DHL. Team CSC, delivered by UPS.

Halfway through the stage race, the race organizer (JJ) could announce a random change to the race schedule. This would create a nice competition between the logistics sponsors, almost like a KOM jersey, but the only reward being showing up at the new staging state.

No, I'm thinking that we could get Amtrak or Greyhound to kick down some change to be the title transport sponsor. Either that, or AAA, as all the team buses will constantly be breaking down.

Also, every 4th stage would be "TBA" until the day before, to keep things shaken up.

Oh man! That is soooo awesome!
Or we could have a crit in the reflecting pool in DC on those pontoon-mounted bikes! That would be sick...
