No, I'm not THAT dumb (close enough though )

I'm talking with the front wheel off the bike - should I be able to move the flange laterally? It's a Specialized Stout 20mm front.
I thought that perhaps the bolts on the ends of the 20mm axle press it together and eliminate play when the wheel is on, but I'm not sure.

I'm asking it because the wheel is "clanking" under load, probably something in the hub is wrong. Just making sure.

it shouldnt have any play, you should tighten those out side bolts

I'm not talking about the wheel on the bike. Of course on the bike it shouldn't have any play.

My question is whether some play (<1mm) is normal when the wheel is off the bike and nothing presses the flanges against the hub body.

I checked the hub again now and it seems to be quite bad - it's not smooth whether the flanges are pressed against the hub or not. Can I service it somehow, or should I just replace it...

yea on some hubs it will move around like that but if its tight on ur bike then it will be fine, my old onxy was liek that
