Some guy got in an accident with another bike rider in the park today and his brand new Giant TCR Advanced SL was in two pieces. I wonder if they other rider was at fault if he can get some insurance money.

Give you a hint:

If this was two cars, what would happen?

And with no liability insurance for bicycles, guess what happens next?

A couple of years ago at Interbike Dirt Demo, we had 22 Colnago CX-1s, some of the first in existence, had just been air-freighted over. Some guy was riding one, decided to pull a u-turn on the downhill path to the road, and got t-boned by some guy doing about 40 on a Felt AR. Cracked the bike in half, it was pretty amazing. Toasted the front Zipp wheel, just demo'd the bike. The Felt snapped too, and the guy on it broke at least his collarbone. Totally the other guy's fault, it sucked. We had to stash the bike in a box in the back of the booth for the rest of the weekend...

Homeowner's/renter's insurance would probably cover it...

Reckless Cat 3/4/5 racers have been sued to pay for medical bills and bike replacement/repairs from crashes involving typically either 2 or 3 individuals. I don't remember if they personally paid the bills or worked homeowners into it.

If the at fault individual has homeowners renters insurance that policy should offer personal liability coverage that would cover that persons negligent acts.
