back to the New Zealand tip...Jean-Paul Sartre Experience too a typically grad-schooly name for their musical project, but i'm not sure of the academic backgrounds of those involved. members not enamored of the choice would use 'JPS' instead.

anyway, here's a classic example of lo-fi sensibilities, a few velvet underground records, and some self-startedness turned out a very decent band who had true moments of greatness. the later sheened over pop stuff was not my fave era for the band, but it did get them a Matador signing and i was able to see them play the states. the earlier stuff is a bit more skeletal, driving, and frankly interesting. i was going to choose Fish in the Sea as an exercise in restraint and minimalism (the guitar solo is exquisitely to the point; neil young would be proud), but thought that Slip was an overall better choice to demonstrate their edgy, jittery side.
