why don't we just set a post number or a designated amount of time they have to reach before they can start a thread? like say 10 posts or 3 days, i feel like that would pretty much put a stop on it.

At least half of the spam posts come as replies to existing threads, so I don't think it will cut down that much - they'll just reply to a thread. Actually, it makes it a little harder to spot before users report them, because I'd have to happen to read that whole thread, and it's harder to ignore because you can't just skip clicking the thread.
Really, though, I don't want to curtail posting by new users. If someone registers here because they need help or have something useful to share, I'd rather allow that and delete the spam.
