Avid Shorty Ultimate for cross. Put on a full set last night to replace the FSA SLK I had. Whoah hohohoho. Not disc brakes but as good at stopping in the dry as my Dura Ace road brakes. No squeal or chatter. Light feel. Two ladies noticed the brakes and chatted me up!

Is that the new adjustable one? Can be wide-profile, or narrow-profile?

Yes. Sometimes you buy something for your bike and it does not work as well as you had hopped, like a Joplin seat post that blows oil and wiggles a lot. Disappointing. Or you buy a sweet Carbon seat post and works but you know, all it does is hold your saddle in place and it's not all that exciting. But now and then you get something that you figure will work better and they end up working far better than you had hoped and well these brakes for me are that. One finger braking through Stanley Park trails this am. Tickled pink I tell you.

Nice! I sold off my TRP Euro-Mags, so as I'm going to start a new CX build, I'm in need of some brakes, these were on the top of the "check out" list.

Now all I need is a frame...

Just to confirm - Avid Shorty Ultimates are ****in rad.

Can be a hassle to setup, depending on your brake studs, and up until recently have had compatibility issues with wider Zipp rims...but otherwise, holy ****.

I was tempted by the Ultimates, but went with the TRP CX9 mini V's. Sooo never looking back at Cantis!

scroll down to page 10.

problem is, since mine were free, i'm having to rig up the spacers to accommodate for my studs. I'm going to call Avid tomorrow and see if they'll send me some washers.

The bolts that hold the calipers to the studs are apparently easy to round off, so be careful with that (per Jose @ SRAM NRS).

And lastly, the 2 pieces on the left are what come with the Ultimates (spacer and nut). The piece on the right is the nut that comes in a Jagwire brake shoe. The Ultimate setup won't work with 303s (again, per Jose) and as I learned today, 101s. The pads are too close to the rim and can't achieve proper angle. So I had to replace the nut with that from a Jagwire shoe. Supposedly this is being corrected, or has already been corrected.

(the nut is the piece that's sandwiched between the pad and the pad carrier...)

Interesting, I've been running 303's with Ultimates for a while with zero issues... Please post up what you come up with.

They guys at SRAM always say everyone's break studs are "out of spec". Interestingly enough I've only ever had issues with stud length on... SRAM brakes.

Factory setup from SRAM. Pad can't be rotated, nor dropped down far enough for proper pad adjustment w/ a 303.

Spacer removed and nut behind pad replaced with shorter version. Much better. Adjusted for my 101s, but would only need to be dropped a little for these 303s.

Rad, thanks for posting those pics. We build a custom frame for a rider this fall that whined at us about where the brake studs were on the back of the bike. Now I know I can blame it on SRAM.
Dustin- can you post a pic of the rear brake setup when you get a chance?

and...

RR brakes were way off with that spacer left in place. But now, I've got about 4 - 5mm worth of space to move them down.

Brakes still have a ton of stopping power.

So your saying with the old spacer gone you can lower the pad more than with the spacer? I am having the problem on my Crux with the front. I has to be set up wide to get the pad low enough.
