Texas Art Teacher Loses Job After Topless Photos Surface
UPDATED: 12:57 pm EDT June 17, 2006

AUSTIN, Texas -- A Texas high school teacher is fighting for her teaching license after her partner posted topless pictures of her on the Internet.

Survey: Should Teacher Have Lost Job Over Topless Photos?

Before that, school officials in Austin thought Tamara Hoover was an excellent art teacher. However, after the photos surfaced on flickr.com, she was told she had become ineffective and was fired.

Hoover makes no apologies for the pictures and said they are art. The photos show her in the shower, lifting weights, getting dressed, in bed and doing other routine activities.

The school district said the photos are inappropriate and violate the "higher moral standard" expected of public school teachers.

The Austin Independent School District wants to revoke her teaching certification. Hoover said she will appeal and will go to court if necessary.

I've not looked at them (at work..) but does "in the shower, lifting weights, getting dressed, in bed and doing other routine activities" really sound like art?

Still seems a bit rough to sack her, but perhaps it wasn't as low profile as she suggests?

I don't see any topless pictures?

edit: nevermind, found them. They just weren't in the link posted.

fluff, the photos that are there are in an "artistic" nature - that is, they're not dirty candids, they're clearly exposed, framed and processed with some care. By "routine activities" they don't seem to mean while she's performing them routinely, just that they are normal activities.

Sorry, I've got very little sympathy here, though. If you're a teacher, you're held to a different set of standards than the general public is. If you don't like it, don't be a teacher. Posting nudie pics on a public website is something a teacher shouldn't be doing.

I think that is the photographers work, nothing really to do with this teacher
Ah, gotcha. I wasn't browsing the site that much since I'm at work, I see now that the teacher in question isn't the publisher of the site. I assumed it was.

I don't think that's entirely the issue.
What is the issue? If she's putting up pictures of herself naked in the classroom, then there is an issue. If not, she's free to live her life outside of her job.

sorry, I'm sick of all the "held to a higher standard" thing. whether they're baseball players, politicians, or teachers (or whoever), they're people first. if they're not a) breaking the law or b) hindering their ability to do their job, they should be able to do whatever they want in their private lives. if this teacher is tenured and she's in a union, the school district is f'ed. basically this school is going to spend hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars on legal fees just because she showed a (fully legal) nipple on her website. gee, that's such a much better use of school resources than would be to spend that money actually TEACHING CHILDREN.

Hey, wait, you paint. Are you one of dem subver-whatchamacallits?
I paint nekkid chicks and you like it.

It's the justification for getting another year's worth of titty mags, so I can use them as reference.

So it would be okay if she worked part time as a stripper then? After all, dancing is an art, right?

Why would that be a problem? Is she doing lap dances in the school?
Because I think it sets a certain moral standard. In my opinion, if you raise a child who grows up to be a stripper, you have FAILED as a parents. Just my opinion. And having a teacher (read role model) as one certainly wouldnt help deter kids from that lifestyle. So yeah, having my daughter posing in porn would be a failure too. This teacher is posing naked, there's a fine line. She's crossed it. State agrees with me. You lose.

State agree with you, I lose? What?

What she did is not even illegal. She posed topless for some photos in a town where women can walk around topless if they want to. How is that the "State agree[ing] with" you?

Second, what is this "moral standard"? Can a male teacher go to a strip club? Would that violate your "moral standard". How far can the employer delve into the personal life of the employee? Would it be OK for her to take a topless photo if no one saw it, or would that also violate your "moral standard"?

If you cant understand why a teacher shouldnt also be a stripper, then there really is no point in having this argument.

If you can't back up your arguments then there really is no point in having this argument.

Can a teacher be gay? Can a teacher have a side job as a bartender at a strip club? Can a teacher frequent strip clubs (not as a job)?

Edit: Seriously, what are the rules in BurlyShirley land?

No.Yes.Yes.

I make the rules up as I go.

Obviously.

So, it is all right for a teacher to frequent strip clubs, but not to work at one? Double standard?

I'm still at a loss as to how it is wrong for a teacher to work at a strip club, or even to do what this woman did. Her private life is just that, private. You still have yet to back up a single thing you've said.
