20 year old John Bennett had to skip a couple days of school to go to Redlands classic this year, but I’m sure his professors at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo will forgive him when they hear about his 90mile break-away and victory in today’s Redlands Classic City of Beaumont circuit race. Starting early and finishing strong is nothing new for Bennett as he’s already won the U25 classification at MERCO and two early season road races. Not only did Bennett stand atop the podium as stage winner, he also took the green Sprint Jersey.

As Bennett and his breakaway companions Pipp from Bissell, Gaimon from Kenda, Morton from Chipotle and Klun from Kenda grew their gap to over two minutes multiple teams came to the front to try and bring it back. Jamis / Sutterhome and Realcyclist.com both put full teams on the front of the chase pack, but the break continued to work well together. In the end Bennett joined a bridging group to stay away and outsprint his remaining breakaway companions.

The Cal Giant / Specialized team will have their work cut out for them in the next two days defending Bennett’s jersey, but that’s nothing new for a team that has been racing at the front of every race thus far in the 2011 campaign. A collection of U-23 riders with a few veterans, the Cal Giant / Specialized team continues to achieve results in key races.
