A new set of wheels showed up with the big brown truck today and they came with a set of Kenda Nevagal's on them (Thanks James!!!).

I know they're a good tire but was hoping for some insight.

I'll be riding then next couple of months in wet/muddy/rocky conditions. I currently have a set of WTB Weirwolf's on my bike and I know they handle well in the above conditions.

Does anyone have any opinion on the Nevagal's vs. the Weiwolf's? I'm kind of thinking it might be better to wait for things to dry out before I put the Nevegal's on.

I had a set of Weirwolf 2.4's mounted up last year and hated them. They just never felt secure in the corners and the traction up hill was marginal. I switched them out for my 3rd set of Nevegals and love em. Yes they are quick to wear out with the stick-e rubber but the grip in corners, on rocks and climbing is worth it....

I can't comment on the WTB tire, but the Nevegal is a good tire; it has a fair amount of rolling resistance but it will hook up in almost any conditions, including mud.

The weirwolf's have a healthy amount of rolling resistance too, I think probably more than the Nevagal's.

I'll try them now then, see how they are.

Thanks!

I am admittiedly not a fan of either tire, in any conditions, but IMO, a really great Northeastern Spring tire is the 2.2" Kenda Karma. Good air volume, open tread, fast rolling.

i have been running the karma 2.0". the tire does very well in many conditions but not great in the mud/soft. the nevegals are a better all around tire that is fur sure. also you can get both in DTC which will greatly help out the rolling resistance and weight

I really like the Nevegals, but I also like the WeirWolf tires. The Kendas are on there already, just try 'em out why don't ya?

Nevs roll painfully slow regardless of compound. The Karma is a good tire but doesn't come alive until you get the pressures down. Could use a little more spacing on the side knobs for really muddy days but otherwise have found it to clear well. At higher pressures (32+) I don't like it at all so I run them at 22f/24r (I'm 175 with riding gear). I consider the Nevegal a "safe" tire for the average trail rider, allowing more room for error but at a slower pace, not something I'd run in the mud. YMMV.

If anyone happened to be at Mt. Snow for Nat'l champs last year it was a muddy, mucky mess for xc. Mary McConneloug lit up the pro field on Karmas and Mike Broderick took 3rd in pro men on the same. Only mention it because of the similar conditions to what vtjim is likely to see in NE this spring.

As James said since they are already on the bike I'll try them out. If I'm not happy with the way they handle in the mud compared to the other set then I'll switch them out, but after everything I've heard about them I would like to try them.

Thanks for the advice.

I ride Kenda Karma or Maxxis Crossmark tires when its dry or close to dry. If its going to be wet, really loose, or all around conditions, I ride Maxxis Advantage tires. I have found that they actually clear mud quite well, have a decent amount of bite, and not a terrible amount of rolling resistance. They are also pretty light. For a full on wet tire I would personally run the Maxxis Mudusa.
