why? Clearly I understand the need for more bikes simply to have more bikes. But is there a more functional reason?

For example, I have a longish travel FS mtn bike and a SS HT mtn bike. They both have their benefits, and depending on my mood and where I'm riding, I pick one over the other.

Is there a similar case for roadies? Perhaps a steel frame with racks and wider tires for commuting and a high end carbon ride for racing?

I'm considering a new frame/bike and wondering if I'll have any need/want for my old one. I don't race and I commute on the same bike I do longer "club" rides on, so that's not really an issue for me.

I have a road bike and two cross bikes. Most of my roadie friends have at least two bikes, a road race bike and a time trial rig. Some even have lightweight bikes for stages/races requiring a lot of climbing and then stiffer, more aero, bikes built for flat races.

James has a lot of bikes becuase he loves carbon and he can :)

Not fair, one of my bikes is scandium!
:)

Honestly though, I have too many, I will admit that, but like a mountain bike, they do ride differently.
They may mostly be carbon, but the Look has a totally different feel and ride than the Colnago, and even between the Look models I can feel a difference.
Not like the difference between a single speed and a long-travel mountain bike though.

But subtle changes in materials and geometry do make big changes in the rides.

I have 2 I used to have 3. and the main reason was at first was because the one was a Fixed gear. But I have since sold that . now the reason I have 2 is when I got my Latest road bike , I really would not be able to sell the old one for much and was worth more to me then what it would sell for, so I converted it to a TT bike and one that I use early season and on Rainy commutes and the 1 or 2 TT/Tri's I do a year .

I could see having a rainy/winter bike if I lived somewhere that got salted during the winter.

Instead of a road bike, I picked up Stosh's Zion to turn into a urban/store/trailer hauling rig.

I built one of those up last fall, turned out great. Would have been a lot better had I not left it at my dad's house, but oh well.
It was really hard to fight my natural urges and pimp it out, but I did ok in the end.

I've never had multiple road bikes but with multiple mountainbikes one is ridden and the others end up being fancy spare part hangers.

At the moment I have quite a few bikes that most bike geeks would consider road bikes. Even with 7 or 9, there is very little overalp between them all. The stable as of right now;

'95 Ritchey Road logic (more miles than most riders)
Smorgasbord 853 custom (was my race bike in '99)
Spooky Kittenpaste (3speed scorcher, my main commuter)
'80s Japanese fixie conversion (48 spoke wheels, etc, heavy and slow for less windchill in the winter)
Spooky Skeletor (hmm, I should take a picture, 7005 race bike)
Spooky Crying Game (my personal steel 'crosser)
Giant TCR Advance (research?)
two bikes worth of tubes I've yet to join, a 7005 'crosser and a road bike made with plastic and glue.

That's 9 bikes there. If I was still racing, I'd need to add on a TT bike. There's no good bike for hauling on that list either...

Depends on what you call a road bike.
I'd tend to leave out any CX bikes, fixies, commuters, etc, anything that doesn't have skinny tires, no racks, is used for the express purpose of putting in miles on asphalt.

They're all road-going bikes, but not "road bikes," at least in my eyes.

That said, I have too many "road" bikes, and seeing as how most of them have the same build kit, it's kind of stupid. But I was that way with MTBs for a long, long time, so it's second nature. I see something shiny, I want it, I get it, I see something else shiny, etc...

But with the exception of 2 of them, I'm utterly in love with them all, the other 2 I'm mostly just fooling around with on the side...

I live in Oregon and riding in the winter here kills drive trains, so I have my nice road bike, and then a thrown together cross bike I use as a winter road bike. I don't race cross so it's specifically a road bike for me. It has disc so I can run better brakes in the winter as I have small/broken hands and road brakes in the pouring rain don't do much for me.

Watchin' you. Writing it all down.
I have one. Used to have a few sets of wheels but the dura ace set rarely ever came off so the others went buh bye. I've played with the idea of some deep dish carbons but usually just get a deep dish pizza.

I used to have a cross bike but I lent it to a friend and he never gave it back (he did give me a check).... I haven't missed it enough to replace it.

i got 2. one custom and the other is one i've always wanted. both are steel but one is 853 and the other is lugged SL. and now i'm looking for a 3rd. why? why not. i'd like carbon, but everyone's doing that now. i hate alu. i'd like a Ti, so i'm keeping an eye out for a good used one (hopefully cheap). but i'm still looking at a steel ride. newer steels are light, and some are pretty reasonable if i stay away from more of the name brands. the new steel will probably have a carbon rear end, so i can at least say it's part carbon. i don't have a problem with carbon frames, i can wait.

but on a seperate note, anyone have any experiences with buying used pro team bikes? i found the old Kodak Sierra Nevada team is selling stuff off. not all is used but probably most is. the prices look pretty good, but i'm not sure if i want to do it or not. they got Kuota frames and complete bikes and Serotta Ottrotts.

I think you would be safe, altough I would check them out to see if they had been wrecked. I doubt used pro road bikes have the kind of abuse that used pro DH bikes do.

If I was concerned about salt I'd be more worried about the summer. I pulled my fork off last month and the whole inside of the head tube and steerer was packed full of salt from dried out sweat. Pretty f'ing disgusting.
