Although it seems like I have new road bikes a few times a year the reality is that I usually can't keep one longer than a few weeks.

I need to build a bike or two that is mine.

Stuff I want to build to keep:

-I've already got a single-speedable CX bike lined up that I'm using as a test platform for the new 44mm external tapered bearing setup and PressFitBB30.

I don't care about the tech ****, but this will be the first CX bike that I've ever had that will have bottle mounts, hozontal deraileur hanger drops that facilitate single-speed use and a bb low enough to make it a fun road bike.

We have an asinine amount of dirt roads around here, and although I usually ride the hell out of them on my race bike it would be nice to have a bike that I could pay less attention on. Since my fitness is absolute garbage a bike that I could race singlespeed class on would be great. If i don't train I only have one speed, semi-fast so I might as well capitalize on it.
People also love all the above-mentioned characteristics, so it'll make a great marketing tool.

-A fendered aluminum bike w/discs to use as my commuter/winter bike.
Because I can, because I need one and because if we build one I think that people would want to buy them.

When the new batch of stock race bikes are done I'd like to keep one for myself, but something makes me think It'll move out from under me pretty quickly.

Stuff I want to build for ****s and giggles:

-A tt bike. I love aerodynamics and ergonomics and there is a surprising amount of aero tubing available in aluminum right now. I'm looking for the right customer for one. Going full-bore dialing their position in the wind tunnel, using our Retul system and working geometry magic to make the bike handle well is all stuff that I'm good at. I've got a college degree in that stuff that I haven't used for years too and I want to refresh myself before it all goes to waste

- A lightweight project bike. Our stock aluminum frames are already super light. If I beg/borrow/steal some lightweight parts I could easily get one down to the high 12's. A complete and total lack of funds is going to make this a pipe dream.

What are you guys jonesing for/hope to build up this year?

A TT bike, probably snagging one in a couple of weeks. Don't really care what it is/looks like, as long as the geo is right and I can slap deep wheels on to go fast in a straight line.

I'd really like a new road frame (Skeletor or System Six are on top of my list), but probably not anytime before the race season. Gotta eat first.

Sometimes I get burned out, and I stop caring about bike stuff. But then like a week later I'm back.
I do have two bikes worth of cockpit and wheels coming, so that has me super stoked right now.

Thing I want the most is a rad alloy wet weather bike, something I can run some slightly fatter tires, fenders, and be all HARD AS F*** out on the roads. Seems that bike has turned into a carbon bike, but it's still all good, maybe it'll turn into alloy later this year.
I was stoked for this year to be the year of Campy in the James Household, but a challenger from Japan with a battery it seems is going to challenge that. But the other bikes will stay Italian, which of course means it'll be a pain in the arse to swap wheels around.

Hoping this will be the year for the custom steel job, almost made it happen this fall, but funding for toys fell through last minute.

YAY FOR NEW TOYS!

Still loving my Skeletor. Gonna keep riding it until it breaks or until something better comes along, which is probably going to be another Spooky eventually. I'd love to complement it with a cross bike but I think the reality is I just don't need one / wouldn't ride one enough to justify it.

For now I'm just dreaming about wheels way too much. My drivetrain is pretty much shot so now I'm also thinking about going the route of a new DA group since I need rings etc. already. We'll see.

Also need shoes, mine are falling apart. Probably gonna try to get some Gaerne from a friend or just EP some S-works.

for those of you doin tt bikes, i have a zipp 999 set im gettin ready to out on ebay....heres the catch

the rear is fine, one dent that has been filled and bearings are still awesome, front wheels rim need to be warranted by zipp ($379), but otherwise, spokes and hub are great.

Im going to list on ebay for 1100, but if you would want this set, let me know what you think a fair price is and maybe we could work something out.

Basically at 1100 dollars, its a 999 set for 1500 once the rim is warranted.

And it comes with the 150 dollar zipp wheel bag :)

All I'm going to do is buy an old man cassette - anything to avoid a triple in my declining years.
Sadly, I am thinking the same thing at 27 years of age. I have a 27T (pun possibilities?) cassette coming to me. I live at the base of a big-ass mountain (Mt Baldy), if that makes a difference.

Hopefully, this year will be the year I replace my current road bike. Don't know which one yet. On the list to try are a skeletor, R3, RS, Addict, CAAD10, Allez, Tarmac, system six, and BMC Racemaster. Essentially anything that is sold locally. Mostly depends on what what I can afford and what I like.

As for big cassettes, I have a 27T as well, but I also live near a couple of infamous hill climbs.....so.

James,
It sounds like you need to buy 2 frames from me.
Thanks.

Ha, that does seem to be true doesn't it? Maybe when I have some money again, this whole "having kids" thing gets expensive, why didn't anyone warn me?? Let's circle back around later this Spring maybe. I still want to make it happen...

I do have a dream about doing a pretty traditional-looking steel bike, maybe even lugged, but then design it for Di2, all internal routing, clean battery mount, etc. A meeting of past and future.

Until my wife finds a job again bike stuff only gets purchased if its broken. I do need a good pair of bibs and maybe a nice pair of sun glasses if I get lucky. Also trying to help James get funds for more bikes.

Maybe some tires soon? I'm looking at a new DH bike and a burly trail/park bike (6X6 or so) in the next couple months, so no budget or excitement for anything much on the road side.

I'm hot for wide rims. A23s, 101s, Firecrests, HED...I'm really convinced these things are legit. Can't afford FCs, even at my price. So...101s and A23s it is. Hoping 101 rims will be available in 24/ 28 hole soon.

Oh yeah, I've been toying with this idea actually, I have some DT240 hubs to build up, was thinking of doing some Open Pro CDs, standard radness, but some HED Belgiums were pretty interesting too. Have a buddy who swears by their wider tubulars. 25mm tires are my thing for '11.
Zipp makes some 101s for PRO guys for training that are like 2x or 3x or something. Pretty cool.

What is the benefit of the wider rims
Stiffer, stronger, and HED claims more aero. Apparently the disruption that happens between the round side of the tire and the bead can be mitigated with wider rims. There is a little more info at the link below. HED has been leading the charge for wider rims (through his line and Bontrager).

Plus better ride characteristics, especially with a slightly wider tire.
25mm tires are my biggest upgrade across all my bikes this year.

With disc brakes UCI legal in cx just a matter of time that it trickles down into DH specific Rd.( Heras experimented with DH specific Rd. wheels built by Head that were xtra heavy, switched bikes at top of climb) bikes for grand tours or even some spring classics. Will be abit before brake people develop cool specific Rd brake stuff, until then the bike will be good to go anyhow. Next hot thing for me is bamboo cx rig with disc brakes. Current road bike getting trashed riding it off rd, my roadie friends think I'm nuts riding it on dirt roads but those DH tendencies hard to let go off.

I don't think we'll see many racers changing bikes at the top of climbs. You can only corner so fast, and the time to be gained is minimal. I actually hope we don't see wide adoption of disc brakes in cross. There is a good argument to be made that it's dangerous (shouldering your bike with a hot rotor doesn't sound appealing) and it kills the aesthetics of the bikes.

Lighter? No. Hell, I think it's kind of stupid that floor bikes are lighter than UCI limits. Stiffer....eh. It's beyond noticeable difference to me already. Except wheels.
