When do I need to place my pads?

I did a search and found out that most people replace them 1-3 times a year, depending on riding conditions. They say that you will need to replace them more if they "drag". What exactly is "drag". Is it when the rotor is rubbing the pads? What are some of the signs that I need new pads?
Thanks..

I replace my pads when my rotors are close to eating through the metal brake pad backing. I wear them down all the way.

check the thickness of your pads, when you are really close to the metal backing plate they need to be replaced, compare with new ones at a shop, drag is when the rotor touches the pad when you are not braking, bent or warped rotors are usually the cause. or you can drag your brakes all the time on the downhills.
