Hey, I've recently taken to riding my XC bike on the local pump track to help hone my handling ability, and it got me to thinking about how the concept of a short technical track could be better adapted to XC training. At present, my idea is to make a track similar in layout and size to the usual thing, but to incorporate short, fast technical climbs, small downhill switchbacks/chicanes into part of the track, as well as other cross country accoutrements. Has anyone tried this before? if so, what are some tips?

It sounds to me you're more interested in building a skill building area. A pump track is intended to not be pedaled and the obstacles you describe would require pedaling. Building a skill building area would be great however. You could build an area with a rock garden, some low risk skinnies, some log crossings, some tight turn even on flat ground... just let your imagination guide you.
