Costco does this thing (not that it would necessarily help you unless the shop you work in happens to be a warehouse with no windows) where they'll slowly start turning off the lights from the back towards the front. I've been in there once while they're doing it and it's funny how much people can be herded like cows.

Sounds to me like you handled it perfectly fine.

I used to work for a small retail store as well (for seven years). If a customer was lingering past closing time, I'd politely tell them we're closing up and ask them how I could help them. I never had to wait much more than an extra 15-30 minutes. If you can't handle an occasional 15-30 minute delay to help a customer and the business you're working for, don't work in retail. If you're late for something and tell the person you were tied up with a customer, they'll understand. **** them if they don't.
I'm fairly sure Julie would complain that I do too much to help people out, but I had somewhere to go.

I did leave out that I went back to install a fork and bar tape for a good customer and to install a computer for a new customer last night. I put my extra hour and a half in doing repairs, which I don't always do.

It's silly to read what some folks suggested. I'm with you, it's retail. The bigger piece is, I do this mostly because I love bikes. I also try to not do it to other stores. I don't close early. Period. I tried to go into a CVS for a watch battery at ten til 10 one night and they locked the doors early. I won't go there if every other place in town burns down now.

I find that it's the people who have never worked retail that find no problem with walking into a store as it's closing just to browse.

Often times they have attitude, and offer an air/sense of entitlement.

The people I don't mind letting in are the people who look frantic, who need a tube or a patch kit. Those people always know exactly what they want, and exactly where it is. They often will run or do that jog/skip/fast walk towards the aisle that has what they need, and they are always appreciative with multiple "Thank yous", etc.

Having worked in a small shop before, the owner was a cool guy about after hours. Seems his thoughts were that he could always use another sale for the $$$. Sure, if there were plans (shop ride, dinner dates, movies, etc), he'd make it clear and say he had 5 minutes. My parents are the same way-- you're there for the customer. Sure, there have been times where folks were told to shop elsewhere, and those were extreme cases. Now that I work in a casino, if I have to make a ruling on a hand, I usually side with the player, knowing that we'll get the money back in a few hands anyway. At least for that moment in time, the customer/player/etc felt like they were taken care of, and they made the right choice in doing business with us.

You think there is something wrong with charging a PITA asshole customer more? Why? If everybody made assholes pay for being assholes maybe they wouldn't be assholes as often.
The problem with the sliding price scale is that it is discriminatory. Rules are easy to follow and they apply equally, like closing time is 7pm.

But who knows what is the reason why customers can be aholes. Recently, I went to a Safeway deli counter about 30 minutes after the counter closed. I was craving chicken salad and the tray was still sitting in the front counter right underneath the scale.

I asked the kid running the counter to help me and he told me asininely, "Counter is closed". I didn't like his attitude, so I complained for 5 minutes to his manager until he helped me. It took a total of 10 seconds for him to serve me a container of chicken salad.

I am sure that kid, who got himself worked up to the breaking point instead of helping me, thinks I am an asshole. I came after closing and demanded help. I see it differently, of course.

So should someone discriminate against a customer because they think he is an asshole?

Well, you are an asshole, but it's not like it's hard to help either. If a section of a store is closed, but it's something simple like that, it's easy to help. I don't see the need in getting whacked out. (crap - I forgot the smiley. Sorry, Steve)

The only things that really and truly piss me off are when people come in to have an on the spot fix performed and then act like they don't have time to wait on it while you drop everything to fix it. F*#k them. If they leave, I immediately take their sh*t off of the stand and put it in the queue.

The other thing is when someone comes in on their phone and I return to work and then they get pissy when they have to come find me. I didn't interrupt them, don't interrupt me. It's like I should follow them around like f*#King Dolly Parton in "9-5" like I am their f*#king secretary. No thanks.

I wouldn't disagree. I gave that kid a ton of crap but in my nice voice so it really confused him.

If someone came in and asked me for a 700x23 long stem presta tube, I would be glad to get it for them. I would like to think my request at Safeway was the same.

If someone came in after closing and wanted to browse bikes, then I would tell them to leave. I would think it would be the same if I asked to sample several dishes before deciding which one to purchase.

I wouldn't have helped you. See it IS easy to help you. But if I help you after the counter is closed then I have to help the next asshole who walks up late too. And on and on.

I think the thing is that you're open til X time.

I've been to places where they will lock the door up to 20 minutes before that time.

I will then only go back during business hours to find the manager and let fly with my opinion and obscenity laced tirade. Then I will be done with the place and that's that.

However, I also don't go strolling in five minutes before the close and expect to take an hour. A tube or maybe a quick tool or tire? Sure, why not? A step by step instruction on how to take apart my 303's suspension? I'll come back in the morning.

I was going to give you a real hard time for knowing about such a horrible movie as that, but then realized that I know what movie you're talking about. :imstupid:

Yes, charging them more I do. Asking them to just please leave and take their business elsewhere, no. Do they charge me less if I'm overly nice and polite as a customer? If they put a surcharge on asshole, what about stupid? Then what, let's charge blacks more, or women more?
I have to agree with him on this one...it's just poor business practice as well as potentially opening you up to a lawsuit...D

These days I hang my hat in Seattle.

We're putting together an all comers Whistler trip on July 11 to 14.

I respect people's time enough to not even go into a shop within 5-10 minutes of closing. Its a bike shop, whatever I need can wait until later - it is not like my children are going to starve because I couldn't buy that tube today.

So, some folks come in as I am wrapping the day up
this happens to us daily. our hours are 9:30 - 7 on weekdays. we rarely close at 7 because people come in regardless of whether the auto-sliding doors are on or off. seriously, i've had people slide the doors open themselves in order to come in. it's ****ing annoying. ****ers have no respect for our time. last night was horrible. we had 3 customers walk in at 10 after 7. 1 bought a bike. the other 2 took up sales staff time and walked out with nothing at 7:45. one of those guys came up to my tent last weekend at an even and that the balls to say "we're not here for the race, but do you have any coupons to hand out?" what the ****?

those of us in service get dicked over because we have to wait and check the bikes over after sale to make sure all is well and to install various stuff and things. nothing like installing a wired cadence computer at 7:30.

we had one guy on Monday say that we were going to build a bike for him at 6:50 or he was going to go somewhere else and buy it. who pulls that kind of ****?

one thing i like about riding to work is that i can easily say "sorry, bitches, i have get home before dark. see? no lights."

Am I an asshole because I just got done with a ride after 8pm and I wanted something to eat?

It is easy to tell people to piss off, but Safeway is not going to be hurt by the loss of my business. If you are running a bike shop, are you positive that losing my business is not going to hurt yours?

You make a good point...I would have told him the same thing. "Sorry we're closed" end of story...stores keep certain hours for a reason...and complaining to the manager about something so simple trying to get this kid in trouble just makes Sanjuro an even bigger @sshole.....D

Well, the next time you want something very simple but the person who has to help you decides not to lift the smallest finger because it wasn't his job, don't complain.

Remember, 10 seconds it took to make a customer happy. 10 seconds. You and Laura must be on your high horses if you think I was being unreasonable.

Don't try and change it around...you didn't get helped because the person was lazy it was because they were closed...CLOSED!! It's a pretty simple concept...D
