My father, a Mormon conservative (who for all intents and purposes is rather racist), native Arizonan who used to rabidly love John McCain (and the GOP as a whole), sent me an email today from Barack Obama's website about Obama's economic perspective and his support for it.

That's how I know. When the old white guys are jumping ship, you KNOW you fvcked up big. I look forward to November...

My mom (Christian conservative) thinks Palin is crazy. She also thinks that a woman who had a Down's baby a couple of months ago should be raising the kid instead of playing "My First National Campaign."

I'm starting to wonder if that hidden thought (which cannot be aired, because it's sexist) balances out the covert racism. It might...

People around here say the biggest reason they won't vote for Obama is that his middle name is "Hussein."
You just can't fix that kind of stupid.

Sorta like trying to fix this kind of stupid:

Rep. Alcee Hastings told an audience of Jewish Democrats Wednesday that they should be wary of Republican VP nominee Sarah Palin because “anybody toting guns and stripping moose don’t care too much about what they do with Jews and blacks.”

“If Sarah Palin isn’t enough of a reason for you to get over whatever your problem is with Barack Obama, then you damn well had better pay attention,” Rep. Alcee Hastings of Florida said at a panel about the shared agenda of Jewish and African-American Democrats Wednesday. Hastings, who is African-American, was explaining what he intended to tell his Jewish constituents about the presidential race. “Anybody toting guns and stripping moose don’t care too much about what they do with Jews and blacks. So, you just think this through,” Hastings added as the room erupted in laughter and applause.

i think it hinges on race, particularly white attitudes. A great deal of support for Republicans in the past couple of decades has been crypto-racist.
So when a 1/3 of democrats won't vote for him because of the color of his skin....even Robert Byrd can't win those pesky racists over with his support of the chosen one.

do you have anything to say about the dem primaries where obama garnered 90% of the black vote? are you holding whites to one standard & blacks to another? that's not even separate but equal. should we go back to before plessy -v- ferguson?

it's tradition, baby:

and even less credible: http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/la-oe-shipler16apr16,0,2335261.story

nothing more than heads-i-win-tails-you-lose mantra. of course, it will be naked racism if obama's not elected.

My father is as about Republican as they come. He has become so pissed off about the corporate welfare state we have become he probably will just not vote this year. Not to mention I think he would have a problem voting for a "broad".

Earlier this year, I would have agreed with you.

At this point, considering how bad the country is doing thanks to Republicans and how unattractive of a choice of Palin is and McCain's decision-making behind choosing her, I think there are more serious issues than latent racism.

Yeah I heard that from someone in my office. I actually have lost any respect for her. She won't vote for him because she saw a photo of him with a towel on his head.

I know it's sad! I make fun of her daily now for being dumb. I told her that gas isn't going to get to $67/gal by December and to stop reading news in the NY Post.

The Bush Administration has been the petree dish for breeding ignorance.

It used to be considered a right to criticize and disagree with your government. Now it's unpatriotic.

I'm glad to see this thread. My parents are full on right-wing Christians and are all up on McCain's sac. They seriously think Obama is a front for Muslim fundamentalists who are trying to take over the US from the inside out. But even more absurd, they actually think that Sarah Palin is qualified to lead the country.

It makes me happy to know that at least some republicans can swallow their pride and realize who put us in our current situation.

bwahahaha:
It seems that Mr. McCain is afraid to debate Mr. Obama, and for good reason too... I suspect he is a poor loser. I would like to see a Palin / Obama debate, in fact, I would pay money for that ticket!!! I have nearly become a pariah in our neighborhood for my backing (and signs) of local Democratic candidates. (It is a little challenging since our current state representative is in our congregation. He is a good guy, but does not seem to understand or appreciate my views very well.) I am not certain how people will take the Obama / Biden sign I want to put in the yard!!!

I suspect that the white angry males are mad about no one in government watching as their retirement funds disappear... The Republicans will be lucky to have anyone left in public office after November... Oh well, Utah will be their one bright spot...
When my father is thinking sh!t like that...ah, it's just elevating to know that people have finally woken up to a limited degree.

I experianced that awakening among people here in Stockholm when the UK/US invaded Iraq in 2003, people who I never previously heard to speak of politics started talking about how wicked the US was. It felt really good to experiance that awakening, but now it's all a forgotten old story..

Towing the party line.
Experience first and foremost, of which he has ZERO, nada, none!

Sorry, 143 days as a senator does not cut it...
Mayor of a small town of 6000 and being a raging fundamentalist hyppocrite is good for an executive position through right? As is being a POW!

Being a harvard law school graduate specializing in constitutional law isn't however.

Please go get educated, Obama did.

Just in case you forgot, do you consider Palin experienced enough to be president? Then I'll go into Obama's experience, which may be more expansive than you think.
