The Iron Horse Bicycle Classic in Durango CO over Memorial weekend is my favorite race. Although it doesn't draw the crowds it has in the past, it brings me back to my mountain biking roots and is always a quality race. Plus mountainbiking in Durango rocks!
24 Hours of Moab is eclipsing IHBC as my favorite race though.
If you are in S.C. area, have a look at the SORBA website, http://www.sorba.org/
There is a racing link there to a series held mostly in Georgia. Don't know what sort of proximity this is for you.
Don't get hung up on distances. This is not an accurate measure of how exhilarating the race will be. Instead, look at finishing times from previous year's results for the class you intend to compete in. Look at the top 10 finishing times and middle of the pack. You should be able to estimate how much saddle time to expect.
Short races are just too short to be memorable. The Shen 100 is cheap for what you get, well organized, excellent rider support, spectacular trails and most importantly includes 2 nights of all the beer you can drink.
