You can- it's called an old tire, a pair of scissors and a few zip ties.

Function over form, laddies, or are the 2 grams saved actually worth the expense? Kevlar downtube protectors made from modified vest trauma plates are probably the next step...

well, now that i think about it on failed ups it will definitely help prevent creasing the downtube. but initially i was thinking about it from a DH perspective (thrown rocks from the front wheel), and didn't see that happening on that rig.

Nobody answered me before but, how much are they running for or how much would people be willing to pay. I can make those and in fact have one sitting at my house right now, carbon minus the grooves.

the bike it's on looks like a trials bike....strange...
It is... a Planet X. And you're right about the failed ups, I know alot of riders with dented downtubes due to that, it ain't pretty, especially when it causes frame failures (as one of my friends demonstrated).

I made some for my bikes using Lexan...Cost me about 10 bucks (Canadian dollars) for a piece of 1/4" and cut 3 guards from it. Pretty darn cheap and it has been on my bikes for 3 years and counting...
Any pics?

That carbon guard is cool. I kind of wonder how long it's going to hold up though. There's this company down the street from us called Utah Sport Cycle that makes skid plates for motorcycles. They make them out of 1/4" aluminum plate. The last time one of our buddies bought a skid plate from them, the USC guy mentioned something about how everybody buys a carbon skid plate these days . . . then after the first blow to the plate go back to aluminum. Granted DH bikes aren't going to inflict the same kind of force onto the downtube (hopefully) that a moto bike puts on the skid plate, but just some food for thought.

Carbon doesn't dent and due to the weave pattern it disperses impact force pretty well. I know you guys sell the alum. plate guard and I think that it is probably more than adequate for its intended job but, I guarentee that if I smack it with a ball peen hammer it will dent and carbon of the same thickness will not. Carbon may crack but it won't dent.

Yeah, I know the stuff won't dent. That's actually the reason I'm wondering how well it will hold up. By no means am I saying that the product is going to be garbage just from looking at a picture on the internet. I'm just curious as to how well the resin is going to hold up to impact. Obviously the type of fiber and resin the manufacturer uses is going to affect this alot.

One thing's for sure, the carbon looks way cooler than diamond plate. :D
